Pirates paint Owls black, 31-13
East Carolina opened Conference USA play Thursday with a 31-13 win over Florida Atlantic in front of a “blackout” crowd at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
Playing in all-black uniforms for the first time, the Pirates were led by senior tailback Vintavious Cooper’s 144 total yards, as they improved to 2-0 overall.
Florida Atlantic dropped to 0-2 overall in their C-USA debut.
Cooper scored once, from 7 yards out in the second quarter, and ECU took a 21-6 lead into halftime.
Cooper finished with 95 yards rushing.
ECU quarterback Shane Carden followed up last week’s 447-yard, five-touchdown performance with 191 yards passing and two touchdowns.
Dynamic junior receiver Justin Hardy had four catches for 36 yards and a score for ECU.
Freshman wide out Davon Grayson also added a touchdown grab and Chris Hairston scored a rushing touchdown.
The Pirates’ defense kept the Owls out of the end zone until 1:03 to play in the fourth quarter, forcing three turnovers on the night.
