Letter: Painting at VGCC

To the editor:

Last fall I took Leslie Johnson’s Portrait Painting Class at Vance-Granville Community College. Leslie teaches painting with oils, a medium totally foreign to me, and something I had always feared.

It was exciting to watch my grandson’s face come to life with my brush strokes, and I realized that I should have tried to do this long before I aged into my senior years.

If you have ever wondered if you had the ability to paint in oils or looked at a portrait and wished you could do that, now is the time to try. Leslie starts teaching a new class on Feb. 5 in the art room at VGCC on Wednesdays from 2-5 p.m.

There are new enrollment policies in place at VGCC starting this semester. For this art class you must enroll and make a payment of $70 by Jan. 28. Theresa Summerville in the PEP office can give more information. You can reach her Tuesday through Thursday at (252) 738-3427.

To see what Leslie’s students can do, come and view an exhibit of portraits painted by students in her class for the past two years. The exhibit was hung on Thursday on the first floor of Building 7 and will be taken down on the morning of Jan. 16.
