Editorial: Lifetime investment available
We highly recommend going downtown in Henderson today for the fourth annual Ducky Derby.
Whether we claim the winning duck or not really isn’t the motivation — though most of us could use the cash. But the folks who can really use the cash are the little ones — the children.
The Franklin-Granville-Vance Smart Start puts on the Derby and Garry Daeke hustles through the community hoping as many people as possible get the Quack Pack or more. When they donate, the non-profit organization Smart Start and its volunteers are able to fund programs and services for families and children up to age 5 in the three counties.
The cause is worthy, and the action is tremendous. Where else is there a city without a river running through it that gets one every fall, courtesy of Greystone Concrete and a cement mixer?
Only in Henderson. And the people of the community will ultimately make it a success. Food, vendors and activities begin at 10, the derby is at 2, and the impact on youngsters can last a lifetime.
We call that a pretty good deal.
• Tired of hearing the chatter on crime and police and other ills of the community?
Don’t let the perceptions be a drag. There’s a lot of good things happening here, and one of them is with a young man who was serving each of us.
Gus Gray, a firefighter, was injured in a car crash in May. He’s now wheelchair-bound, and his house wasn’t ready for him.
His friends and colleagues have rallied together, giving his home on Watson Road a makeover. He’s expressed his appreciation to them, his regret for driving while fatigued and his optimism in the future.
There’s lessons in the story for all of us. We wish him well in his recovery.
• The plight of Coloradans has harkened memories for many North Carolinians from the mountains to the coast.
Our mountains have, from time to time, been hit by flooding, though nothing quite as drastic as the last few weeks. Our plains saw a 500-year flood in 1999.
We offer encouragement to help our fellow Americans, remembering to be wary of scams and those who would take advantage of our generosity.
And we offer our prayers.
