Editorial: Nomination for program very deserving
Our school board in Vance County got one right earlier this week.
They nominated the entities forming the backbone to the Save Our Kids program. The Henderson Family YMCA, the Henderson-Vance Parks & Recreation Department and the Henderson Optimist Club were jointly put forth to the N.C. School Board Association 2013 Business and Non-Profit Honor Roll.
Save Our Kids brings the county’s second-graders to the pool to teach them water safety. It is not swimming lessons; rather, an acclimation to the water with an ability to save themselves should an unfortunate event happen in a place such as a pool or Kerr Lake.
All 10 public elementary schools participated this year, reaching more than 500 children. This year, invitations are expected to go out as well to charter and private schools.
• Sad days arrive when we see fellow businesses opting to close up shop.
We’re hoping a slice of Americana can survive a little longer. And we know the Tri-County has plenty of people capable of doing well in online voting.
The Raleigh Road Theatre is hoping for a new digital projector. It is the way of the industry, it is costly and it could well mean survival for our local drive-in — one of the few remaining in the country.
The Honda Corporation is going to give away five.
Easiest route to voting is the theater’s spot online at raleighroaddrivein.com where a link is provided.
• Video from the dash cam of Trooper A.G. Knight was making the rounds this week after a press release from the N.C. Highway Patrol.
It hit national cable channels, and with the warning to be careful of stopped motorists.
In the video, Knight is conducting a traffic stop on U.S. 64 in Wake County. He hears the sound of skidding tires, the smell of burning rubber and makes a frantic dash away from the highway as 80,000 pounds of an 18-wheeler locks up and comes to a halt in the middle of the two lanes of traffic.
The “Move Over” law was enacted in 2002. And whether it is law enforcement on the side of the road, a stranded motorist or anything else, we need to be attentive.
