Letter: Suggestions to commission
To the editor:
Vance County commissioners successfully reduced the overall budget by $455,875 (1 percent) after 16 very public hours of line by line review.
On June 13, they listened to the county manager’s “final” adjustments to the budget that restored $82,312, or 18 percent, of the commissioners’ cuts.
Without a whimper, commissioners agreed to restore those cuts, netting the commissioners’ budget cuts to $373,563, or 0.8 percent of the original budget proposal.
What was in those dinners and lunch the taxpayers’ bought the commissioners that clouded their minds? Clouded, so much so, that the commissioners agreed to add a $57,383 planner to the Planning Department, even though the director of planning was unable to justify the position when queried by four commissioners.
I offer these suggestions for inclusion in the commissioners’ approval of the budget on Monday, June 23:
• Commissioners and staff will pay for their meals effective July 1, 2014, for all meetings, including committee meetings.
• The finance director will present a quarterly financial report similar to the corporate world, starting October 2014.
• The county manager will develop and recommend a plan for review at the annual retreat to utilize 21st century technology to cut postage costs and paper costs by at least 50 percent where legally applicable.
