Letter: NAACP, GOP teaming up
To the Editor:
A disturbing number of our children are failing to become reasonably competent in the basic educational skills needed to pursue a life of hope, happiness and prosperity. When a substantial number of children become trapped in this “death spiral,” the issue becomes vitally important to the entire community.
Two groups with which I am involved, the Vance County chapters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Republican Party, are very concerned about this enduring trend. As their representative, I would like to encourage concerned citizens to sincerely consider an opportunity that has proven to be very effective in giving those children most in need, the feeling that “someone cares about me.” That potentially life-saving activity is reading to a child or small group in one of our Vance County elementary schools.
If you feel this is an activity, a mission, really, worthy of your time, you are encouraged to contact Pinkston Street (438-3441) or L.B. Yancey (438-6923) elementary schools to begin the sign-up process. If neither of these schools is a possibility for you, you may contact another elementary school of your choice and personnel there will tell you how to get started.
All applicants are required to submit to a background check.
