Letter: Congressional failure
To the editor:
Sen. Patty Murray, who negotiated on behalf of the Democrats, has failed. President Obama’s approval rating is between 43 and 38 percent. His base is keeping him there. For those 1.3 million people who will be losing their unemployment insurance on Dec. 28, he can’t afford to lose them.
What’s in the bill? There is no revenue, federal workers will pay more on retirement, there’s a $2.50 charge on airline tickets, more money for defense and no unemployment money for 1.3 million Americans at Christmas time.
Rep. John Boehner, speaker of the House, has the worst legislation record in the history of the USA. The House approval with American people is 1 percent. Hardline Republicans decry the deal. Boehner and Rep. Paul Ryan attack them. It appears to be a sham. Don’t believe the hype.
They will try to approve the bill as is. They will have a Merry Christmas, but 1.3 million American families will not. The unemployment money for those families will be spent in those communities on food, rent, bills, barber shops, beauty, shops, clothing, etc, all leading to jobs within those towns and cities.
