John L. Capps

ARCOLA — Dr. John Lawton Capps, 53, of Gastonia, died Monday, March 11, 2013, at his home.

He was born on May 14, 1959, in Warrenton, the son of the late Amos Lee and Rebecca Davis Capps of Arcola.

John was a graduate of Warren Academy High School, received his bachelors degree from Wake Forest University and earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. He served the Gaston County community for over 20 years in the practice of Internal Medicine, and more recently in Bariatric medicine in Rock Hill, S.C. John served on the board of Gaston County.

Department of Social Services and on the board of the House of Mercy in Belmont. John was a loving father, friend and cancer survivor.

Stan Patterson will conduct a service to celebrate the life of Dr. Capps at 6 p.m., today, in the Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

Dr. Capps will then be taken back to his childhood home for a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Arcola, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors of Dr. Capps include: his daughter, Samantha Lynn Capps of Belmont; son, Stewart Bailey Capps of Gastonia; mother of his children, Karen Lee Kickham of Gastonia; siblings and spouses, Weldon Clinton and wife, Betty Jean Capps and Sylvia Capps Greene, all of Arcola, Lester Davis and wife, Elke Capps of Warrenton, Amos Lee Capps Jr. of Arcola, Robin Wesley and wife, Frances Capps of Warrenton, and Lynn Capps Martin and husband, Michael, of Arcola; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Chip Capps, Timothy G. Capps, Davis Capps, Drew Capps, Matthew Martin, Wesley Martin, John Porter and Robert Porter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 2129 NC HWY 43, Warrenton, NC 27589.

Charles J. Galantis Jr.

HENDERSON — Charles John Galantis Jr., 68, of Kinston, formerly of Henderson, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston.

Born in Chester, Pa., on June 22, 1944, he was the son of Carrie Lou Stevenson Galantis of Henderson and the late Hanzis John Galantis.

Mr. Galantis graduated from Epsom High School in 1964. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the 464th Air Police. After completing his military service, he joined the Henderson Police Department in 1966 and served 21 years with the department as patrol officer, detective, special ops team, and law enforcement instructor. He retired after three years as police chief with the Norlina Police Department, ending an honorable and successful career in law enforcement. He also served a brief period in the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 16, 2013, at 4 p.m., at New Sandy Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Timothy J. Burgess. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 18 years, Mavis Rigsbee Galantis; a daughter, Stephanie Lynn Jones and husband, Jeremy, of Henderson; a son, Charles John Galantis III and wife, Kelly, of Clayton; a step-daughter, Mavis Bullard of Butner; two step-sons, David A. Bullard and wife, Noel, of Charlotte and John F. Bullard and wife, Carol, of Ocracoke; two sisters, Sultana Ferrell of Wake Forest and Sophia Bolton of Norlina; a brother, Michael J. Galantis of Henderson; four grandchildren, Alayna Galantis, Noah Jones, Charles John Galantis IV and Levin Galantis; two step-grandchildren, Amelia Bullard and Thomas Bullard; two nieces; and four nephews.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 15, 2013, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Michael and Elisa Galantis, 909 Edwards Road, Henderson.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Steven R. Ferrell, John David Ferrell, Kevin Stancil, Nickolas Bolton, John Galantis, Bill Stevenson, Jerry Stevenson, Larry Jacobs and Carter Lee Abbott.

Jeffery La’mont Alston

CLARKSVILLE, Va. — Jeffery La’mont Alston, 39, of 664 Old Soudan Road, Clarksville, Va., died Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Granville Medical Center in Oxford.

He was born in Vance County, Jan. 22, 1974, to the late Charles E. Lloyd and Julia Ann Alston.

He was educated in Vance County Public Schools and was employed with Turn Key Communications.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 16, 2013, at noon, at Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Reginald Lloyd officiating. Interment will follow in the Hunt Family Cemetery.

Survivors include: four sons: Se’Darius Bracey of the home, Jeffar Alston and Eric Alston, both of Henderson, and Jamal Alston of Louisburg; three daughters: Jasmine Alston of Henderson, Jamarria Alston of Louisburg and Sharetta Degree of Virginia; eight brothers: Demario Alston of Townsville, Jammie Alston of Henderson, Wayne Lloyd of Raleigh, Reginald Lloyd of Henderson, Kevin Lloyd of Henderson, Ricky Parham of Jackson, Ga., Thomas Barnett and Marcus Cozart, both of Henderson; three sisters: Gwen Horne of New Jersey, and Mary Ragland of Henderson and Sandra Lloyd, both of Henderson; and two grandchildren.

Viewing will take place Friday, March 15, 2013, from noon-6 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Sidney H. Carroll Jr.

HENDERSON — Sidney Hartwell Carroll Jr., 56, died March 11, 2013.

Carroll Jr. was born Oct. 16, 1956, to the late Sidney Hartwell Carroll Sr. and Marie Carroll in Henderson. He received his education from Vance County Public Schools.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a granddaughter.

Survivors include: his brother, Alonza Carroll; his two daughters, Shauna Elam and Shara Hawley; two grandsons; and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 16, 2013, at 2:30 p.m., at Progressive Faith Missionary Baptist Church.

A viewing will take place Friday, March 15, 2013, from 1-6 p.m., at Garnes & Toney Funeral Home in Henderson.

Charles E. Lloyd

HENDERSON — Charles Edwin Lloyd, 67, of 1217 Stagecoach Road, Henderson, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at his residence.

Born in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Lee Edwin and Ella Belle Terrell Lloyd.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 15, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Mitchell Missionary Baptist Church by Dr. Daniel W. Lilly Jr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Gwendolyn Horne of New Jersey, and Marie Lloyd and Mary Lloyd, both of Henderson; five sons, Reginald Lloyd, Kevin Lloyd and Marcus Lloyd, all of Henderson, Wayne Lloyd of Raleigh and Ricky Lloyd of Georgia; two sisters, Daphine L. Carroll, Helen McQueen, both of Garner; one brother, James R. Lloyd of Henderson; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

The body will be on view at the funeral home Thursday, March 14, 2013, from 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m., and at the church one hour before the service.
