George I. Day

OXFORD — Mr. George Ivey Day, age 66, of Oxford, died Monday, March 11, 2013, at Brantwood Nursing Center.

A native of Granville County, he was the son of the late George Robert Day and Janie Bowling Day. George Ivey was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, a retired veteran of the U.S. Army, the National Guard and DBW Construction Co.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Chapel by Dr. Randy Bridges. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight, from 7-8:30 p.m.

Surviving is his wife, Patricia Adcock Day; a sister, Sandra Day Peed of Raleigh; and nieces, Kristen Peed Ludwig of Mentor, Ohio, and Dr. Ivy Peed Pointer of Chapel Hill.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Granville County Animal Shelter, 5650 Cornwall Road, Oxford, NC 27565.

HENDERSON — Sidney Carroll died Monday, March 11, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Durwood R. Garner

KITTRELL — Durwood Ray Garner, 74, a resident of 295 George’s Lane, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Born on Oct. 23, 1938, in Johnston County, he was the son of the late Oscar Garner and Stella Rose Garner. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines and was a retired cable foreman for Carolina Telephone Company. He attended South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church. He also coached baseball for over 20 years for the Henderson Recreation Department, and helped host A & B bus tours.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at 2 p.m., at South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Frank Sossamon and the Rev. Gary Harper. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Roadifer Garner of the home; one son, Steve Garner of Wilmington; one sister, Ermine G. Marshall of Norfolk, Va.; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by one son, Trent Ray Garner.

The family will receive friends today, from 7-8:30 p.m., at J. M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home at 295 George’s Lane, Kittrell.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Durwood Daniels, Donny Crowder, Pete Worrell, Jim Mateo, Wayne Roadifer, W.C. Harris, Tom Howard and Pat Reese. Honorary pallbearers will be Garner’s co-workers at Carolina Telephone/Sprint.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church, 905 Americal Road, Henderson, NC 27537.

Andrew Hinton Jr.

HENDERSON — Andrew Hinton Jr. died Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Kindred Nursing & Rehabilitation in Henderson.

The deceased will be cremated.

Melinda B. Jarrell

HENDERSON — Melinda Brewer Jarrell, 43, of 1030 Jackson-Royster Road, Henderson, died Sunday, March 10, 2013.

Born in Florence, Ala., she was the daughter of Deborah Johnston Brewer of Henderson and William Austin Brewer Jr. of Seaboard.

Jarrell was an employee of Pacific Coast Feathers, Inc. She was a member of South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 14, 2013, at 11 a.m., at South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church, by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are a daughter Miranda Kay Jarrell of the home; two sons, William Chris Jarrell and Ryan Michael Jarrell, both of Henderson; a sister, Chrysti B. Vaughan of Henderson; and two grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday, from 10-11 a.m., at the church. All other times, they will be at the residence.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Charles Jarrell, Caleb Jarrell, Clarence West, Jason Crowder, Joseph Penny, Deckie Crowder and Allen Travis.

Flowers will be accepted; or memorials may be made to the church or a charity of one’s choice.

Celestine E. Jefferson

BULLOCK — Celestine Evans Jefferson, 57, of 2266 Tungsten Mine Road, Bullock, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Dorothy N. Rogers

OXFORD — Dorothy Nicholson Rogers, of Oxford, died Monday, March 11, 2013, in Wake County.

A native of Newport News, Va., she was the daughter of the late G. C. Nicholson and Zora Allen Nicholson, and widow of Eugene Rogers.

She was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church where she served as secretary. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the Cosmopolitan Club.

Funeral services will be conducted at Oxford United Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at 2 p.m., by Dr. David Haley. Entombment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, from 12:30-1:45 p.m., at the church prior to the service.

Surviving is a daughter, Barbara Rogers of Oxford. She was preceded in death by Myrtle Haskins, Glover Nicholson Jr., Mary Woodlief and Zora Roberson.
