Raymond E. Downing
HENDERSON — Raymond Elijah “Ray” Downing, 86, of 63 Ridge Circle Road, Henderson, died Friday, March 8, 2013, at his home.
Born in Edgecombe County, he was the son of the late Elijah Warren Downing and William Ann Johnson Downing.
Downing was a retired real estate broker. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. A member of Freedom Life Church of God, he was a former head of the ushers and served on the finance committee.
Funeral services will be held today, at 3 p.m., at Freedom Life Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Jeff Prewer. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Survivors include: his wife of 65 years, Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Wilson Downing; a daughter, Judy Elaine Downing of Fuquay-Varina; a son, Randy King of Warrenton; a sister, Margie D. Adams of New Bern; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Joyce D. Conner and Elsie D. Collier; and five brothers, Ralph Downing, Rudolph Downing, Laverne Downing, Reuben Downing and L.P. Downing.
The family will receive friends today, from 1:30-3 p.m., at Freedom Life Church of God. All other times, they will be at the home.
The ushers of Freedom Life Church of God will serve as active pallbearers.

Gertrude J. Green
OXFORD — Gertrude Louise Jones Green, 89, a longtime resident of Granville County, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Universal Healthcare in Oxford.
A native of Person County, she was the the widow of Harold Lee Green and the daughter of the late William Bradshaw and Janet Moore Jones. She was a member of West Oxford Baptist Church, a retired healthcare technician at John Umstead Hospital and owner/operator of H&L Mobile Home Court in Providence.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 11, 2013, at 2 p.m., in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Wes Garner Jr. Burial will be in Granville Memorial Gardens in Oxford.
Survivors include: a daughter, Dianne Green Wells and husband, Dr. Michael E. Wells, of Stem; four grandsons and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials can be made to West Oxford Baptist Church, P.O. Box 458, Oxford, NC 27565.
Active pallbearers will be Travis Wells, Ernie Jones, Darnell Carver, Keith Huff, Randy Green and Brin Wilkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Green, Cecil Green, Bobby Huff and Robert Cox.
Visitation will take place Monday, from 12:30-1:45 p.m., prior to the service at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the residence of the deceased in Providence.
