Laura N. Burnette

OXFORD — Laura Newby Burnette, 97, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at Universal Health Care.

A native of Granville County, she was the wife of the late Fenton A. Burnette and the daughter of William Newby and Jennie Keeton, both deceased.

Laura retired from Granville Manufacturing Company after more than 30 years of service.

She followed her love for cooking and sewing until she was 93 years old, when her health would not let her continue.

Until her death, she was the oldest living graduate of Stovall High School and the oldest member of Salem United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Burnette O’Brien (Charles) of Orlando, Fla.; son, Bill Burnette (Nancy) of Oxford; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her nine siblings, Virginia Newby O’Flanagan, Cora Ann Newby Henderson, Willie Newby, Marvin Newby, Nell Newby Currin, Raymond Newby, Ollie Newby, Eloise Newby Cash and Lucy Newby Jones.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home by Rev. Glenn Stallsmith. Burial will follow at Meadowview Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. At other times they will be at the home of Mrs. Burnette’s son, Bill Burnette and wife Nancy, 404 Harris Street, Oxford.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, c/o Nancy Burnette, treasurer.

Betty O. Kearney

HENDERSON — Betty Elizabeth Overby Kearney, 90, of 50 Martin Creek Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, in a local nursing home.

Born on March 6, 1923, in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Sam Overby and Dora Holmes Overby and was the widow of Willie Lee Kearney.

Mrs. Kearney was a homemaker and a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church by Rev. Julia Alliger.

She is survived by four daughters, Susan Perkinson and husband Henry of Henderson, Marie Newhouse and husband George of Henderson, Sandra Roberson and husband Danny of Olathe, Kan., and Shirley Oakley and husband Graham of Suwanee, Ga.; two sons, Dennis Kearney and wife Robin of Spring Hope and John Lee “Buck” Kearney and wife Margaret of Henderson; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Peggy Leonard; four sisters, Annie Edwards, Gladys Parrish, Ethel Smith and Nellie Shearin; and two brothers, Wilbert Overby and J.B. Overby.

The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Marie and George Newhouse at 327 Franklin Road, off Vicksboro Road.

OXFORD — Aurnette H. Blackwell, 84, of 7516 Shep Royster Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at her home.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, in the Betts & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the New Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.

The body will be on view from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Betts & Son Funeral Home.
