Alva L. Terrell

CHARLOTTE — Alva Lee Terrell, a resident of Charlotte, died on Feb. 3, 2014, at Central Carolina Medical Center.

He was born on Feb. 24, 1939, in Henderson, to Benjamin Pettis Terrell and Gladys Haithcock Terrell.

Alva enjoyed many school sports and social activities throughout high school with his twin brother, Andrew. They continued their education at Campbell College and Wake Forest University, where they excelled on tennis, swimming and diving teams and with their Kappa Alpha Social Fraternity.

Alva began a successful insurance business in Charlotte in 1964, establishing the Alva Lee Terrell & Associates Insurance Agency and earning numerous national sales awards until his untimely death. Alva joined the First Baptist Church of Henderson as a boy and later the Charlotte churches Carmel Baptist Church and Providence Road Baptist as a father. Being a member of Olde Providence Racquet Club for 50 years and serving on the board of directors, Alva coordinated professional tennis tournaments at this facility and had a successful amateur tennis career. Participating in civic activities in his early years, he was a member and served as chapter president of a Charlotte Civitan Club.

Alva is survived by his twin brother and closest friend, Andrew Terrell and sister-in-law Jackie of Raleigh; his sister, Susan Terrell Whitten and brother-in-law Dicky of Henderson; and five nieces and nephews and their children.

Also surviving are the sources of his greatest happiness and pride, his children and grandchildren. His families of children and grandchildren are Tracy Church and Rebecca of Rock Hill, S.C.; Ben Terrell (JoAnn) and Ben and Alex of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Chris Terrell and Christina of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Kenneth Terrell (Kelly) and Matt, Coleman and Jacob of Lynchburg, Va.; and Cape Terrell of Greensboro.

Serving as pallbearers are Abe Ross, George S. Daly, Dr. William G. Porter and Hugh Wise, all of Charlotte; Maurice A. Boyd of Henderson; and Thornton H. Yancey of Oxford.

The family members and friends of Alva Lee Terrell will never again in this lifetime see the joy of life and love of people that so marked his very being but will celebrate the vivid memories of Alva that we hold so dear.

Friends are invited to a memorial service that will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 11 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Henderson, to be conducted by Dr. Ron Cava.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service in the ladies parlor of the church. Interment will be private and will take place in the church columbarium prior to the memorial service.

Carl N. Edwards

HENDERSON – Carl Nathaniel Edwards, age 92, of Henderson, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at his home.

Born in Franklin County on Nov. 16, 1921, he was the son of the late Henry Rueben Edwards and Irene Vaughan Edwards.

He was the owner and operator of the former Edwards Grocery and Carl’s Market.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II at the Battle of Okinawa aboard the USS Tolman DM28.

Mr. Edwards was a member of First Baptist Church Henderson, the Wayne Woodlief Sunday School Class and the American Legion.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of J.M. White Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. Ron Cava and Dr. Marion D. Lark.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Faulkner Edwards of the home; a daughter, Patricia Edwards Godwin of Cary; a son, Carl Nathaniel Edwards Jr. of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Jane Godwin, Carl Nathaniel “Tripp” Edwards III, Sara Edwards and Eli Edwards; and a sister, Grace Mitchell of Suffolk, Va.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

The family will receive friends following the service on Friday at J.M. White Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the home.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the New Sandy Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 1699 Weldon’s Mill Road, Henderson, NC 27537.

Alan K. Jones

RED OAK — Alan Keith “Kim” Jones, 59, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at his home.

Born on July 11, 1954, in Vance County, he was the son of the late Frances D. Jones, Bobby S. Jones and Rachel C. Jones, and was the widower of Beverly R. Jones.

Kim was a graduate of Vance Senior High and Chowan College. He was retired from Universal Leaf North America U.S., Inc., where he was a property accountant manager. After retirement, he moved to Red Oak and became very active in the community and his church, Red Oak Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, director of Baptist Men and choir member. He was a volunteer with his church’s youth group and mission trips, and also at the “In Joy” thrift store.

Kim loved his family, friends and his church. He enjoyed the beach, vacations, holidays and going to see his nieces and nephews play sports.

Graveside memorial services will be held Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Sunset Gardens by Rev. David Barnett and Rev. Larry Bostian. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 9, at 3 p.m. at Red Oak Baptist Church by Rev. Larry Bostian.

He is survived by two stepdaughters, Tracy L. Platt and Jennie R. Platt of Richmond, Va.; his sister, Pat Barnett and husband David; brother, Jeff Jones and wife Sheri and sister-in-law Becky Jones, all of Henderson; a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law, Floyd and Jill Robertson of Dunnsville, Va.; his nieces, Lyndsey Jones, Kaitlyn Jones and Kristy B. Allgood; his nephew, Davey Barnett; and great-nephew, Hunter Allgood.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Jones, and a sister, Cathy L. Jones of Henderson.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service and at other times they will be at the home of Pat and David Barnett at 105 Marsha Drive.

OXFORD — Nicorie M. Downey, infant, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 6, at the Morton Family Cemetery.

William H. Falkner

WARRENTON —William Hawkins Falkner, 77, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Community Memorial Healthcenter in South Hill, Va.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Blaylock Funeral Home by Rev. Matt Love. Burial will follow in Warren Plains Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends prior to the service on Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Blaylock Funeral Home.

Oscar Hicks

CREEDMOOR — Oscar Hicks, 87, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Peak Resources of Treyburn.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Fellowship Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens.

Flowers are accepted, and memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

WARRENTON — John C. Moore, 82, of 1670 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd., died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at his residence.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Manson by Rev. Richard Henderson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

James H. Purnell

HENDERSON — James Herbert Purnell, 88, of 267 Oak Hill Loop Road, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at WakeMed Hospital.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Progressive Faith Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Young’s Memorial Holy Church Cemetery.

Viewing is today, Feb. 6, from noon to 6 p.m. in the chapel Davis Royster funeral service and at the church one hour prior to the service.

CREEDMOOR — Timothy “Dwayne” Slaughter, 35, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at his home.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in the chapel of Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.

Visitation is Friday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
