Robert W. Thompson
ALANSON, Mich. — Robert Wayne Thompson, age 61, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at his home.
He is preceded in death by his parents, retired Lt. Col. Walter Bernard and Anita Anderson Thompson.
Robert graduated from John Graham High School in 1970 and attended N.C. State University.
He was an Eagle Scout and was active in Scouting with his son. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Petoskey, Mich. He owned and operated All-American Lock & Safe and was a referee for the Michigan High School Athletic Association and the National Federation of High School State Association, as well as an umpire for the American Softball Association.
Rev. Ken Hall will conduct funeral services at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton, N.C. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Macon, N.C.
Mr. Thompson is survived by two children, Christopher Scott Thompson of Warrenton, N.C., and Heather Erin Thompson of Idaho Falls, Idaho; two sisters, Susan Thompson Abbott of Henderson, N.C., and Teresa Thompson of Chesapeake, Va.; and two brothers, Louis E. Thompson of Fairfield, Fla., and Paul B. Thompson of Chapel Hill, N.C.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Feb. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060.

Warren J. Lotz
HENDERSON — Warren John Lotz, age 87, a resident of 143 Dabney Woods Lane, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Granville Medical Center.
Born May 12, 1926, in Fort Wayne, Ind., he was the son of the late Herman Martin Lotz and Wilhelmina Reckeweg Lotz.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in World War II aboard the USS Alabama. He was a former attorney and prosecutor and retired judge in Ohio. Mr. Lotz was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriners in Ohio.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Henderson.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Feb. 6, at 11 a.m. by Pastor Edgar A. Vergara Millan in the chapel of J.M. White Funeral Home.
Mr. Lotz is survived by three daughters, Joyce Lotz of Henderson, Deborah L. Stukey of Buckhead, Ga., and Susan L. Nicholas and husband Mike of Henderson; two grandchildren, Michael Nicholas II and wife Meagan and Michaela Nicholas; one great-granddaughter, Madison; and two special caregivers, Frank Diemer and Melissa Hughes.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce C. Castleman.
The family will receive friends following the service on Thursday at J.M. White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Mike and Sue Nicholas, 143 Dabney Woods Lane, Henderson, NC 27537.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Youth Group, 114 Church Street, Henderson, NC 27536.

W. Sumner Smith
HENDERSON — William Sumner Smith, age 93, a resident of 952 Gillburg Road, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Maria Parham Medical Center.
Born in Kittrell on July 20, 1920, he was the son of the late Charles Sumner Smith and Elizabeth Parsons Smith.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired employee of the Daily Dispatch, where he worked as a linotype operator, printer and repairman. He was also a member of Plank Chapel United Methodist Church.
A private burial will be held by the family.
He was the widower of Margaret Brummitt Smith.
He is survived by four children, Beverly Smith Thompson (Gene), Sumner Michael Smith, Timothy Earl Smith (Midge) and William Kerry Smith, all of Henderson; three grandchildren, Shannon T. Reavis (Bryan), Matthew R. Thompson (Carrie) and Amy N. Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Alex Reavis. He is also survived by a brother, Charles P. Smith, of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the home of Beverly and Gene Thompson, at 1072 Gillburg Road, from 3 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 4, through Thursday, Feb. 6.
Memorial contributions may be made to Plank Chapel United Methodist Church, Kittrell, NC 27544.

HENDERSON — Carl Nathaniel Edwards Sr. died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, in the chapel of J.M. White Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home, and at other times they will be at the home.

HENDERSON — Edward Denson, 73, of 280 South Beckford Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Warren Hills Nursing Center.

BUTNER — Sallie Margaret Hicks, 91, of the Murdock Center, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2014.
A grave-side funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at the New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery by Rev. Aubrey Florence.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.

DURHAM — Ernestine Mitchell, 73, of 1309 Hudson Ave., Apartment A-9, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Uni Health Post-Acute Care.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at Jones Chapel Baptist Church in Warrenton by Rev. Anthony Alston. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be today, Feb. 5, from noon to 6 p.m. in the chapel of Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
