Waverly H. Barnes Sr.

OXFORD — Waverly Hobgood Barnes Sr. died Monday, March 4, 2013, at Duke Medical Center.

He was a native of Granville County and was the son of the late George Robert and Mamie Hobgood Barnes.
Waverly was a retired farmer and dairy operator, and former employee of Hilltop Lumber Company. He was a member of Tabbs Creek Baptist Church, former deacon and was a former member of the Granville County Rescue Squad. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Waverly loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved to hunt and was an avid baseball player and fan.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Tabbs Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Ken Compton and the Rev. Lemar Wheeler. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving is his wife, Ann Howard Barnes; daughter, Cindy McKenzie (Will) of Smithfield; sons, Waverly Barnes Jr. (Rhoda) of Raleigh and Dudley Barnes (Carol) of Oxford; sister, Alexine Hoyle of Henderson; brother, Shorty Barnes of Durham; grandchildren, Chris (Holly) Barnes, Will Barnes, David Barnes, Keri Rojas (Chris), Jay McKenzie, Ann McKenzie and Ellie McKenzie; and great-grandchildren, Nash Barnes and Carter Rojas. He was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine Currin; and a brother, Robert Thomas Barnes.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 6, 2013, from 1-2 p.m., prior to the services in the fellowship hall of the church. At other times, they will be at the home of Dudley and Carol Barnes.

Samuel L. Hicks

NORLINA — Samuel Lee Hicks, 57, of 308 Duke Drive, Apt. 102, in Norlina, died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time but will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton.

Ivey P. Hunt

HENDERSON — Ivey Price Hunt, 88, a resident of 1245 Park Ave., Henderson, died Monday, March 4, 2013, at a local nursing home.

Born on Aug. 10, 1924, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph M. Price and Chelcy Bowen Price. She was a homemaker and housewife.

A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday, March 7, 2013, at 3 p.m., in Fairview Cemetery in Franklinton conducted by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.

She is survived by two daughters Pauline H. Barham of Henderson and Christine H. Williams of Raleigh; eight grandchildren; and a total of 21 great and great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sons Claude Thomas Hunt Jr., Clyde Earl Hunt and George Michael Hunt; five sisters, Nellie P. Pearce, Laura P. Doyle, Gladys P. Price, Helen P. Ray and Ruby P. Ray; two brothers Paul Price and Emmitt Price; and two grandsons.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 7, 2013, from 12:30-2 p.m., at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Vance and Pauline Barham, 919 E. Winder St., Henderson.

Sue J. Jackson

HENDERSON — Sue Jackson Abbott Jackson, 87, of 201 Westhigh St., Cary, died Monday, March 4, 2013, at Western Wake Medical Center in Cary.

Born in South Hill, Va., she was the daughter of the late Peter Franklin Jackson and Mattie Sue Taylor Jackson. She was the widow of Paul Jones Abbott and John Douglas Jackson Sr.

Jackson was a retired accountant at Overby Marine Sales. She was a member of Middleburg United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Oxford Chapter No. 94 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at 11 a.m., at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

Surviving are three sons, Paul F. “Pete” Abbott and wife, Sandra, of Asheboro, Thomas A. “Andy” Abbott and wife, Wanda, of Apex and Dr. John D. Jackson Jr. and wife, Teresa, of Clemmons; five grandchildren, Tommy Abbott, Joy Trogdon, Leslie Desmond, Greg Abbott,and Michelle Jackson; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 10-11 a.m., at Flowers Funeral Home.

Dorothy D. Yancey

HENDERSON — Dorothy Deloris Yancey, 67, of 119 Bumper Lane, Henderson, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at her residence.

She was born in Vance County and the daughter of the late Calvin and Christine Virginia Daniels Yancey.

She was educated in the Vance County Public Schools and later move to Paterson, N.J., where she lived and worked for many years before moving back to Henderson to live.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 7, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Ashley Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Lassiter; one son, Ronald Yancey; one brother, John Yancey; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family is receiving friends at the residence. The body will be on view at the funeral home Wednesday, March 6, 2013, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., and at the church one hour before the service.
