Bobby W. Rogers

HENDERSON — Bobby Wayne Rogers, 78, of 2039 Valley View Drive, Henderson, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at his home.

Born in Vance County on June 19, 1934, he was the son of the late Hartwell Biscoe Rogers and Rena Gentry Rogers.

Bobby graduated from Henderson High School in 1952, whereupon he entered the United States Navy. After declining a commission to the U.S. Naval Academy, Bobby received his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1955. He then enrolled at North Carolina State College where he graduated in 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked full-time for the U.S. Bureau of Ships while attending law school at George Washington University.

Bobby returned to Henderson in 1963 and began practicing law. He was the prosecuting attorney in Vance County Recorder’s Court. He also served in the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1970 to 1976, and was a member of the board of trustees at Vance Granville Community College fro1977 to 1989. Governor Jim Hunt awarded Bobby the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award in 1995. Bobby loved his family, North Carolina State College, practicing law, thoroughbred horses and the Democratic Party.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 3, 2013, at 4 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. John Check. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Kim Johnson Rogers; his children, Sam Rogers of Boone, Mike Rogers and wife, Camilla, of Henderson, Matt Rogers and wife, Angie, of Henderson, Justin Roberson and wife, Ashley, of Youngsville, Morgan Roberson and friend, John Cash, of Henderson, Beth Pugh and husband, Curtis, of Stovall, and Colin Roberson of Greenville; his grandchildren, Lauren Thorpe and husband, Tyler of Chapel Hill, Megan Rogers of Henderson, Cameron Rogers of Henderson, Bret Rogers of Henderson, Leigh Talley of Henderson, Matthew Cash of Henderson, and the most recent “light of his life’” Ty Roberson of Youngsville; two brothers, H.B. Rogers of Raleigh, and Steve Rogers and wife, Shirley, of Hampstead; his mother- and father-in-law, Betty and Jim Johnson, both of Henderson; sister-in-law, Amy Johnson of Henderson; nieces, Katie Steg and Holly Steg, both of Henderson; nephew, Christopher Steg of Henderson; brother-in-law, Jimmy Johnson of New York, N.Y.; and longtime family friend, Myrtle Lloyd of Henderson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Rena “Bebe” Perry and a ;brother, Gary Rogers.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 3, 2013, from 3-4 p.m., in the parlor at First United Methodist Church. All other times, they will be at the home, 2039 Valley View Drive, Henderson.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Jerry Stainback, J.H. Hughes, John Zollicoffer, Mike Satterwhite, Donnie Pergerson, Charles Davis, Gene Edmundson, J. Henry Banks and Boyd Sturges. Members of the Ninth Judicial District Bar will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Flowers will be accepted; or memorials may be made to the church or charity of one’s choice.

Malcolm P. Stewart Jr.

MACON — Malcolm Pierce Stewart Jr., 83, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, in Greenville.

He was a Warren County native born to the late Malcolm P. Stewart Sr. and Panthea Cawthorne Stewart. He grew up on a farm in Warren Plains and worked in sheltered workshops in Maryland and Taylorsville. He attended Hebron United Methodist Church and Gardner’s Baptist Church, both in Warren County.

Robbie Ross will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Hebron United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Franklin H. and Ellen S. Thompson and Andrew S. and Panthea S. Kenley.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Margaret Allen, Beth Quillen, Paula Harris, Andre “Cookie” Thompson, Andrew Kenley and Herby Thompson; several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nieswerand his special care givers, Jill, Carol, Thack and Rebekah.

Jolly M. Hamm

WISE — Jolly Mac Hamm, 73, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Durham. He was an Inez native born to the late Eddie Green and Lily Patterson Hamm. Hamm was a member of Gardner’s Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

The Rev. Blake Jackson will conduct funeral services Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Gardner’s Baptist Church with burial to follow in Warren Dale Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Collins Hamm; and his two sisters, Mildred Lyles of Warrenton and Pearl Aycock of Littleton.

Pallbearers will be, Danny Hamm, Danny Hamm Jr., Tommy Lee Hamm, Jason Collier, Ben Jackson and Tyler Jackson. Honorary pallbearers will be Lee Hamm, Lucas Reid and Edward Savage.

Larry J. Tucker

LINCOLNTON — Larry June Tucker, 65, of Lincolnton, (formerly of Henderson) died Friday, March 1, 2013, at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Born June 13, 1947, in Henderson, Tucker attended Henderson High School. After graduation, he served in Vietnam with the military police.

He retired from Merita Baker after 30 years. In addition, he was employed with People’s Bank, Atlantic Credit and was the owner of Granny’s Doughnuts.

He was predeceased by Lucious and Mary Tucker. He is survived by his wife, Jean Cotton Tucker; one brother, Jerry Tucker of Henderson and one sister, Charlotte Ann Hedgepeth, also of Henderson.

Arrangements, which are being handled by Maiden Funeral Home, are incomplete at this time.

Nellie O. Wilkerson

OXFORD — Nellie Owen Wilkerson, 80, a longtime resident of Granville County, died Friday, March 1, 2013, at Brantwood Nursing Center in Oxford.

A native of Mecklenburg County, Va., the daughter of the late Graham J. Owen Sr. and Florence Green Owen. She was a member of Mountain Creek Baptist Church and retired from Burlington Industries.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 3, 2013  at 2:30 p.m., at Mountain Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnny Richards and the Rev. LaMar Wheeler. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are a daughter, Galesa W. Campbell of Oxford,two sisters, JoAnne Williamson of Clarksville, Va., Dorothy Elmore of Henderson, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Macon Wilkerson; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Wilkerson; a sister, Christine Ramser; two brothers, William Owen and Graham J. Owen, Jr.

Visitation will take place Sunday, March 3, 2013, at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home of her daughter.
