Mae O. Pettiford-Opher

BALTIMORE, Md. — Mae Ola Pettiford-Opher died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Sewickley Hospital in Sewickley, Pa.

The former longtime resident of West Baltimore, Md., moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., in 2008 to live with her son and daughter.

The daughter of Warren C. Pettiford and Fleta J. Williams was born March 17, 1930, in Oxford. In her early adult years, Mae moved to Baltimore, Md., where she met and married Joseph M. Opher. Both she and her husband were longtime active members of the Galilee Baptist Church in Dundalk, Md.

She leaves to mourn: one daughter, Valerie D. Opher; two sons: John B. Winston and Keith M. Opher; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral will be conducted Monday, March 4, 2013, at Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Home on Liberty Road. The wake will take place at 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery immediately after the service.

The viewing is scheduled for Sunday, March 3, 2013, from 2-8 p.m. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carol P. Wilson

HENDERSON — Carol Ann Pierce Wilson, 73, of 664 Rabbit Bottom Road, Warrenton, (formerly of Henderson) died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Born in Orange County, she was the daughter of the late Lenward Earl Pierce and Mary Kendrick Pierce.

Mrs. Wilson was a retired employee of Revlon Inc. She was a member of South Henderson Church of God and attended Freedom Life Church of God.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Freedom Life Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Jeff Prewer. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery.

Surviving are four daughters, Sheila W. Winn of Epsom, Kathryn W. Pendergrass and husband, Ronnie, and Lisa W. Lawson, both of Henderson, and Brenda W. Leonard of Warrenton; four sisters, Virginia P. Dickerson of West Monroe, La., Ellen P. Ranes of Smithfield, and Thelma P. Evans and Mildred P. Harris, both of Henderson; a brother, Paul Elmer Pierce of Jackson; five grandchildren, Amanda Ellis, Danielle Satterwhite and husband, Kevin, Christopher Lawson, Jonathan Leonard and Matthew Beck; and three great-grandchildren, Logan West, Luke West and Devin Satterwhite. She was preceded in death by a son, Crawford S. Wilson Jr.; three sisters, Dorothy P. Manning, Blanche P. Crowder and Catherine P. Crowder; and two brothers, Lenward E. Pierce Jr. and James Daniel “J.D.” Pierce.

The family will receive friends today, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Sheila Winn, 1421 Tollie Weldon Road, Henderson.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Kevin Satterwhite, Chris Williamson, Jonathan Leonard, Christopher Lawson, Bennie Collier, Harvey Harris, Ricky Abbott and Ronnie Pendergrass.

WISE — Jolly Mac Hamm, 73, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Durham.

John E. Jeffreys

HENDERSON — John E. Jeffreys, 86, a resident of Bullock-Green Assisted Living Center, died Wednesday at Warren Hills Personal Care and Nursing Facility.

He was the son of the late Rev. Josiah Jeffreys and Lillie Crews Jeffreys. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by two sisters, Beatrice J. Hargrove of Brown Hills, N.J., and Ada “Jean” Jeffreys Dailey of Warrenton.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 4, 2013, at noon, at Morning Star United Holy Church by Elder Shirley Piercy. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will take place Sunday, March 3, 2013, from noon-5 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Lucy A. Rhodes

WYOMISSING — Lucy Ann Rhodes, 76, died Feb. 23, 2013, at her Wyomissing residence.

She was born on June 30, 1936 in Henderson, a daughter of the late Lewis and Cassie (Evans) Davis.

She married her husband, the Rev. James E. Rhodes Sr., on June 11, 1954.

Rhodes attended George Washington High School in New York, N.Y. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church, where she also served as a deaconess. She frequently attended Bible class. She was a Sunday School teacher at Union Baptist Church. She was employed by Western Electric, later AT&T, and Lucent Technology in Reading, Pa.

In addition to her husband of 58 years, survivors include: her children, James E. Jr. of Wyomissing; Deborah L. Rhodes and Robin L. Rhodes Carter, both of Reading, Pa.; Ronnie L. Rhodes of Tobyhanna, Pa., and Michael A. Rhodes of Lebanon, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her siblings, Mollie Love, Lenora Davis, Ulysses Davis, Margaret Davis and Lewis Andrew Davis.

Services will be held today, at noon, at Zion Baptist Church, 224 Washington St., Reading, Pa. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park. A viewing will be held today, from 11 a.m.-noon, at the church.

Bobby W. Rogers

HENDERSON — Bobby Wayne Rogers, 78, of 2039 Valley View Drive, Henderson, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at his home.

Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Hartwell Biscoe Rogers and Rena Gentry Rogers.

Rogers was a well known Henderson lawyer. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He attended First United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 3, 2013, at 4 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. John Check. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens.

Surviving are his wife, Kim Johnson Rogers; two daughters, Beth T. Pugh of Stovall and Morgan L. Roberson of Henderson; five sons, Sam Rogers of Boone, Mike Rogers and Matt Rogers, both of Henderson, Justin Roberson of Youngsville and Colin Roberson of Greenville; two brothers, H.B. Rogers of Raleigh and Steve Rogers of Hampstead; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rena “Bebe” Perry and a brother, Gary Rogers.

The family will receive friends Sunday, from 3-4 p.m., in the parlor at First United Methodist Church. All other times, they will be at the home.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Jerry Stainback, J.H. Hughes, John Zollicoffer, Mike Satterwhite, Donnie Pergerson, Charles Davis, Gene Edmondson, J. Henry Banks and Boyd Sturgess. Members of the 9th Judicial District Bar will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Flowers will be accepted; or memorials may be made to the church or charity of one’s choice.

MACON — Malcom Stewart died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, in Greenville.

Mable W. Wells

WARRENTON — Mable Elizabeth Wilson Wells, 89, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at Warren Hills Nursing Center.

She was an Oxford native, born to the late Otha Grady and Mamie Byrd Wilson, and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mariam Elizabeth Wells.

Wells was employed at Peck Manufacturing Company for many years and was a member of Warrenton Church of God.

The Rev. Gary Bateman will conduct funeral services Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Warrenton Church of God, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery.

She is survived by her children, Janet Wells Salter, Ronald Wayne Wells, Leslie Powell Wells and Anthony James “Tony” Wells; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Wells, Daniel Wells, Jonathan Wells, Lee Salter, Bradford “Brad” Salter and Derrick Hinkle.

Edward S. Woodard

KNIGHTDALE — Edward Stanley Woodard, 57, of Knightdale (formerly of Warrenton), died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at his residence.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 2 p.m., at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church in Warrenton (Inez community). The Rev. Junious Debnam, pastor, will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include seven sisters, Barbara of Willingboro, N.J., Theresa Powell of Goodyear, Ariz., Yvonne, Wilma Alston and Rosetta Belk, all of Warrenton, Denise Alston of Middleburg and Barbara Peterson of Philadelphia, Pa.; and one brother, James Privett.

The body will be on view today, from 11 a.m-7 p.m., at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.

HENDERSON — Dorothy Deloris Yancey, 67, of 119 Bumper Lane in Henderson, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at her residence.
