Joy Y. Boydston

LOUISBURG — Joy Young Boydston, 61, of Louisburg, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, after a short courageous battle with cancer.

Joy was a daughter of the late Bill and Evelyn Baker Young. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark S. Boydston; and her sister, Sherri Murtagh.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Bunn Memorial Gardens.

Joy is survived by her daughter, Amanda Boydston of Henderson; sons, John Boydston of Raleigh; Paul Boydston and his wife, Melissa, of Spring Hope; sisters, Diane Batchelor of Louisburg and Rhonda Cox of Raleigh; aunt and uncle, Carolyn and Gene Mullen of Bunn; eight grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 8300 Health Park, Suite 10, Raleigh, NC 27615.

James I. Carey

OXFORD — James Irby “Jack” Carey, 81, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at his home, 100 Maluli Drive, Oxford.

Visitation took place Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Eakes Funeral Home, Oxford, from 7-8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held today, at 10:30 a.m., at Oxford Baptist Church and grave side services will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the Crewe Cemetery, Nottoway County, Va.

Born in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late Irby and Mabel Carey. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernell Brooks Carey; and his son, James “Jimmy” Douglas Carey; and a sister, Christine Glascock.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannette Maynor Carey; his daughter, Susan Carey Frank; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alma Carey of Burkeville, Va., and Ruth Lewis of Salem, Va.

Carey retired from Central Carolina Bank as regional vice president. After his retirement, he formed Granville United Bank, which opened in 1990. He served on numerous banking boards and organizations.

He also served as Granville County commissioner (two terms), as Oxford City commissioner (two terms), on the Burkeville, Va. Town Council and as mayor of Burkeville, Va. He was chief of the Oxford Auxiliary Police, a United Way chairman, chairman of the Granville County Chamber of Commerce Board, and a member of numerous civic organizations in Oxford. He was also a member of the Kerr-Tar Council of Government loan committee.

Carey was a long time member of Oxford Baptist Church where he served on the board of deacons and numerous committees of the church.

WARRENTON — Louise Gayles, 85, of Warrenton, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Christopher S. Hicks

OXFORD — Christopher “Chris” Scott “Slick” Hicks, 51, a lifetime resident of Granville County, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013.

A native of Granville County, the son of the late Garland Laster Hicks. He was of the Baptist faith and worked for many years for Granville County Schools.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at 11 a.m., in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Cam Ford. Burial will be in Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his mother, Linda Garner Hicks of Oxford; a daughter, Johanna Christian Hicks; a son, Garland Kenneth Hicks of Oxford; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Scott Hicks.

Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, from 9:30-11 a.m., at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Charles Jackson

WAKE FOREST — Charles Jackson, 50, a native of Essex County, N.J., and a resident of 329 7th St., Wake Forest, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at Hospice of Wake County in Raleigh.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Jones Jackson; a daughter, Kristen N. Jackson of Franklinton; his mother, Josephine Jackson of Charlottesville, Va.; one brother, the Rev. Donald Jackson, Philadelphia, Pa.; and five sisters, Loretta Garvin of Monroe Township, N.J., Dolores Carr of Charlottesville, Va., Phyllis McNeil of Riverdale, Ga., and Barbara Jackson and Patricia Jackson, both of Newark, N.J.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Wright Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Donald Jackson. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park. A viewing will take place today, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home. The family will be receiving visitors locally at 605 Hicks Mill Road, Oxford.

WARREN COUNTY — Jonathan Lamar Jordan, 32, of Hickory, formerly of Warren County, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, in Hickory.

Priscella Kearney-Bullock

HENDERSON — Priscella Kearney-Bullock, 60, of Henderson, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Granville Health System in Oxford.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at 1 p.m., at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.

Pastor Herbert Anderson will officiate and burial will follow in Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Warrenton.

Survivors include: her husband, William Bullock of the home; one son, Robert Kearney of Raleigh; eight grandchildren; one sister, Josephine Kearney of Henderson; and one brother, James Kearney of Warrenton.

The body will be on view today, from 11 a.m.-7 P.M., at Boyd’S Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.


Kevin D. Mann

OXFORD — Kevin D. Mann, 58, a resident of 4033 Pinetree Hollow Drive, Oxford, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Durham.

He was born to the parentage of Mary Alice Jones and the late Milton C. Mann.

Mann was educated in the Granville County School system and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Greater Joy Baptist Church and was retired from Duke Medical Center as a chef after 22 years of service.

Survivors include: his wife, Gloria Ann Mann; mother, Mary Alice Jones; four children, Lucy Dunkins of Butner, Dorothy Dunkins and Corey Mann, both of Oxford, and Sheka McDonald of Durham six sisters, Ava Johnson, Stephany Jones, Chaquita Mann, Lakeshia Mann, Freda Farrow and Willie Mae; five brothers, Anthony Mann, Milton Mann, Stacey Mann, Elvis Mann and Larry Crudup; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at 1 p.m., in the Betts & Son Funeral Home Chapel, with a eulogy delivered by the Rev. Ronnie D. Morton. Interment will follow in the Amazing Grace Ministry Cemetery.
Viewing will take place Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
