Elberta H. Armstrong

BRONX, N.Y. — Elberta Belle Harris Armstrong, 104, died Feb. 11, 2013, at St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Home in Bronx, N.Y.

She was born Feb. 9, 1909, in Ridgeway, to Robert L. and Susanna Russell Harris, the seventh of 13 children.

Much of her younger years were spent in Littleton, where she attended school.

Showing an appreciation and aptitude for music, her mother taught her to play the piano. As a teenager, she attended Henderson Institute, and played the piano at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church until she moved to Westfield, N.J. While there, she attended music school, and later, when she moved to New York, she attended Julliard School of Music. In addition to her interest in music, she cared for children for many years.

In 1959 she moved to the Bronx, N.Y, where she resided until the blackout in New York in 2003. A fall at the age of 94 required her to give up her home and move to St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Home, where she exhibited her musical talent and could be seen and heard in the day room playing the piano.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse, and son, Wendell; her sisters, Anna and Berlina; and brothers: James, Odell, William, John, Frank and George. Survivors include her sister, Eunice.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of R. H. Greene Funeral Home, 109 S. Front St., Warrenton. The Reverend Walter Yarbrough, pastor of Warrenton Baptist Church, will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Harris Family Cemetery adjacent to Russell Union RZUA Church Cemetery in Norlina. There will not be a viewing.

Laura B. Chavis

HENDERSON — Laura Beatrice Chavis, 87, of 326 Whitten Ave., Henderson, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at her residence.

She was born in Vance County on Feb. 24. 1925, to the late Badger Chavis and the late Anna Johnson Chavis.

She attended the public schools of Vance County and, prior to her retirement, was employed at J.P. Taylor Tobacco Company.

She joined Holy Temple United Holy Church at an early age and remaining a member until her health declined.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Holy Temple United Holy Church, with the Rev. Dr. Roosevelt Alston officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Chavis of the home; one son Larry Chavis of Henderson; three sisters: Mary Walker of Rahway, N.J., and Lillie Kingsberry and Alice Allen, both of Henderson; two granddaughters; 11 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren.

A viewing will take place Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, from noon-6 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family is receiving friends at the residence.

Virgil C. Richardson

HENDERSON — Virgil C. Richardson. 60, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Merdith Vass

HENDERSON — Merdith Vass, 87, of 513 Owen St., Henderson, died February 14, 2013 at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Born in Vance County, she was the son of the late Frank Peter Vass and Clara Hunt Vass.

He was educated in the Vance County Public Schools and worked for 33 years at the former Harriett Henderson Yarn Company earning a Perfect Attendance Award for dedicated service.

Funeral service will be Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at 1 p.m., at Progressive Faith Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. William M. Ragland. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Racheal Solomon of Henderson and Clara Ann Walker of Durham; two sons, Merdith C. Vass and Scottie B. Vass, both of the home; one brother, Thomas Vass of Henderson; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

The body will be on view today, from noon-5 p.m., and at the church one hour before the service.
