Betty R. Elliott
HENDERSON — Betty Ranes Elliott, age 69, a resident of 1111 Satterwhite Point Road, died Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Rex Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
Born on Feb. 5, 1944, in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Ranes and Frances Roberson Ranes. She was a tobacco farmer and member of Flat Rock United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m., at Flat Rock United Methodist Church by the Rev. Cathy Hoyle and the Rev. Marshall Neathery. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Lawrence Elliott of the home; a brother, Wayne Ranes and his companion, Janet Deel, of Henderson; and two sisters, Janet Ross and husband, Marvin Ross III, and Kathy Newcomb, all of Henderson; and two sisters-in-law, Nancy Lamy, Jackie Brown and husband, Roger, of Greensboro. She is also survived by her nieces, Stephanie Grissom, Melonie Gupton, Lynn Nance, Michelle Pierce, Nicole Baring, Janette Johnson and Jenny Evans; nephews, Tony Ranes, Scott Ranes, Kevin Newcomb and Patrick Newcomb. She is also survived by 26 great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother in law Annie Elliott, sister in law Sarah Ranes, brother-in-law, Morris Elliott and a nephew, Paul Elliott. The family will receive friends this evening, from 7-8:30 p.m., at J.M. White Funeral Home.
Serving as pall bearers will be Patrick Bailey, Butch Spain, Dale Reese, Danny Norwood, Tony Norwood, Jackie Ellis, Alex Clark and Santiago Carrillo.

Elizabeth F. Barker
LEXINGTON — Elizabeth Franklin Barker, 84, died Monday, April 15, 2013, at 4:30 a.m., at the Thomasville Medical Center in Lexington.
She was born Sept. 12, 1928, in Oxford, to the late Samuel Edward Parrott Sr. and Martha Harris Parrott. She was also the widow of the late Henry Franklin and William Leonard Barker. Barker was a member of Tabb’s Creek Baptist Church and was a scheduling clerk for Burlington Industries.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 18, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Chapel. Burial will follow at Meadowview Memorial Park in Oxford. The family will receive friends Thursday, from 10-11 a.m., prior to the service.
Survivors include: her daughter, Ellen Dickerson of Lexington; three sons, Larry Franklin of Denver, Don Franklin of Charlotte and Ron Franklin of Hillsboro; three grandsons; and two great-grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carolina House of Lexington, Memory Care Unit, 161 Young Drive, Lexington, NC 27295.

WARRENTON — Ervin Dennis “Bodilly” Hargrove, 57, of Warrenton, died Saturday, April 13, 2013, at his residence.

HENDERSON — James Willoughbye Hicks, 82, a resident of 836 Rook St., Henderson, died Monday, April 15, 2013, at a local nursing home.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, April 18, 2013, at 11 a.m., at First United Methodist Church by Dr. John M. Check. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 17, 2013, from 7-8:30 p.m., at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.

MAPLEWOOD, N.J. — Naomi Dunston Jones, 85, of Maplewood, N.J., (formerly of Warren County) died Sunday, April 14, 2013, in Maplewood, N.J.

Loretha R. Martin
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Loretha R. Martin, 61, a Vance County native, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.
She was born June 13, 1951, in Henderson, to the late Ernest and Queen Richardson.
She became a Christian at an early age and was baptized at Little Zion Holiness Church in Henderson. She later joined Kesler Temple AME Zion Church in Henderson and McKendree Simms-Brookland United Methodist Church, where she sang in the Voices of Inspiration Choir.
She married James E. Martin Sr.: they relocated to Washington, D.C., and, later, moved to New Carrollton, Md.
Loretha worked at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where her career spanned 37 years of service.
Survivors include her husband, James E. Martin Sr; two sons, Kevin of Lakeridge, Va., and James E. Martin Jr. of Chesapeake, Va.; one sister, Barbara J. Parsons, of Henderson; one brother, James A. Richardson of Henderson; and two granddaughters.
A viewing will take place Friday, April 19, 2013, from 10-11 a.m., followed by the funeral service, at 11 a.m., at McKendree-Simms Brookland United Methodist Church, 2421 Lawrence St, NE, Washington, DC 20018.

Robert L. Parham
OXFORD — Robert Lee Parham, 65, a former resident of Granville County and a resident of Newport, died Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
A native of Granville County, the son of the late Elbert Watkins Parham and Kernie Parham Parham. He was of the Baptist faith and worked as a mechanical engineer for the U.S. Department of Defense at Cherry Point Marine Air Station.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at 11 a.m., in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Johnnie Richards. Burial will be in Mt. Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Oxford.
Survivors include a twin brother, Richard W. Parham of Beach City, Texas.

Herbert Charles Rogers
HENDERSON — Herbert Charles Rogers, 60, a resident of Green-Bullock Nursing Care in Henderson, died Saturday, April 13, 2013.
Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late John R. and Jeannette Hart Rogers. He joined Kittrell First Baptist at an early age and attended Vance County Public Schools where he graduated from the former Henderson Institute.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 18, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Kittrell First Baptist Church, by the Rev. Andre F. Gilliard. Burial will follow in the Kittrell First Baptist Memorial Garden.
Survivors include: two daughters, Eva Rogers of Durham and Tanika Johnson of Henderson; son, Antonio Terry of Henderson; one brother, Ray Charles Rogers of Franklin; and several grand and great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Kirby and Shandelan Hightower, 141 W. Andrews Ave., Henderson, Wednesday, April, 17, 2013, from 3-9 p.m. The body will be on view at the funeral home Wednesday, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., and at the church one hour before the service.

HENDERSON — Frances Mae Branch Small, 77, of 820 Coble Blvd., Apt. 3A, Henderson, died Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Durham Regional Medical Center.

Marjorie V. Turner
HENDERSON — Marjorie Van Dyke Turner, a resident of 539 Rowland St., Henderson, died Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Lee Van Dyke and Pauline Ellington Van Dyke, and the widow of Robert J. Turner Jr. She was actively involved with the Turner Insurance Agency with her husband and continued to serve his clients after his death. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Sunset Gardens by Dr. Ronald S. Cava.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, James A. Van Dyke.
The family will receive friends Wednesday prior to the service, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., at J.M. White Funeral Home.
