William H. Oakes
HENDERSON — William Hunter “Billy” Oakes, age 75, a resident of 2275 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, at a local nursing home.
Born on Feb. 13, 1938, in Vance County, he was the son of the late William Belt Oakes and Beatrice Hall Oakes. He served in the North Carolina National Guard and was a veteran of the United States Army having served in Vietnam. Mr. Oakes was the recipient of several awards, including a Purple Heart. He was a lifelong member of Tabbs Creek Baptist Church.
Graveside funeral services with Military Honors will be held Sunday, April 14, 2013, at 3 p.m., at Tabbs Creek Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
He is survived by his daughter, Jan Elizabeth Oakes of Asheville; his son, Edward Hunter Oakes of Wilmington; their mother, Delores Walker Oakes of Chapel Hill; two sisters, Betty O.White and Lucy O. Mantas, both of Henderson; and a brother, Alvin E. Oakes of Henderson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Julian B. Oakes.
The family will receive friends at the home of Lucy Mantas at 2515 Fairway Drive.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tabbs Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Alice Overton, 6537 Harold O’Brien Road, Oxford, NC 27565.

Karon R. Bush
HENDERSON — Karon Ruth Bush, 67, a resident of 704 E. Montgomery St., Henderson, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Duke Medical Center.
Born on May 19, 1945, in Lexington County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late James Felder Bush and Sarah Watkins Bush. She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She received her master’s degree from the University Of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her law degree from North Carolina Central University. She was a retired educator, having taught math at Chapel Hill High School, and was most recently serving as president of the North Carolina Retired Teachers Association, a director of The Boys & Girls Club, and was actively involved in all area civic affairs. She was also a member of the Henderson Kiwanis Club, of which she was a former president.
To honor her wishes, there will be no service.
Survivors include her sister, Norma B. Medlin of Henderson; and two brothers, James R. Bush and Roy Z. Bush, both of Henderson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Evelyn B. Tuck.

Clifton M. Clark
OXFORD — Clifton Martin Clark, 73, a longtime resident of Durham County, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.
He was a former resident of Granville County. A native of Warren County, the son of the late Colonel Datsey and Martha Daniel Clark. He was of the Baptist faith and medically retired.
Memorial services will be conducted Sunday, April 14, 2013, at 2 p.m., at the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Wayne Clark.
Survivors include two brothers, R.C. Clark of Oxford and Carl Clark of Durham.
Visitation will take place Sunday, from 1-2 p.m., prior to the memorial service at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford.

Lizzie Currin
OXFORD — Lizzie Currin, 99, died Thursday, April 11, 2013.
Currin, a twin, was born April 27, 1913. She was one of 10 children born to Mary Pitts Currin and William A. Currin.
She was a lifetime resident of Oxford, a graduate of Oxford High School, and lifelong member of Corinth Baptist Church. In addition to managing and working her family farm, Currin worked for many years at Leggetts Department Store. Her interests included needlework, ceramics, gardening and playing the piano.
The funeral is scheduled for Sunday, April 14, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Corinth Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the services in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to Corinth Baptist Church, 3658 Hwy 96, Oxford, N.C. 27565.

David S. Forsythe Jr.
HENDERSON — David Solomon Forsythe Jr., 90, formerly of Alexander Avenue, Henderson, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, at a local nursing home.
Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late David Solomon Forsythe Sr. and Algie Ayscue Forsythe.
He was a retired employee of Harriet & Henderson Yarns. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted today, at 2 p.m., at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Will Breedlove.
Surviving are a sister, Margaret F. Morton and a brother, Herbert T. Forsythe, both of Henderson. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jeanette F. Van Dyke and Estelle F. Kelly; and two brothers, Edward Forsythe and Clyde Forsythe.
The family will receive friends at the home of Margaret and Roy Morton, 104 Eileen Court, Henderson.
Flowers will be accepted; or memorials may be made to Harriett Baptist Church, c/o Marlene Hayes, 1819 Lynne Avenue, Henderson, NC 27536.

Frank Gibbs Jr.
OXFORD — Frank Gibbs Jr., 59, of 1619 Walter St., died Thursday, April, 11, 2013, at Granville Medical Center, Oxford.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by E.C. Terry’s Funeral and Cremation Service.
The family will be at the residence.

Shelton L. Hunter Sr.
WARRENTON — Shelton Leroy Hunter Sr., 52, of 333 Earnest Turner Road, Warrenton, died Saturday, April 6, 2013 at his residence.
Memorial services will be conducted today, at 11 a.m., at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton. Bishop Geanie Perry will officiate.
Survivors include: his wife, Theresa Hunter of the home; one daughter, Shawn Jackson of Dallas, Texas; one son, Shelton Hunter Jr. of Henderson; one granddaughter; his mother, Mattie Allen Hunter of Warrenton; one sister, Belinda Johnson of Oklahoma; and one brother; Everette Hunter of Quilcene, Wash.
Professional services are by Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton.

OXFORD — Charlie H. Venable, 76, a resident of 8524 Grassy Creek Road, Oxford, died Friday, April 12, 2013, at his home.
