Mary E. Ashe

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Mary Etta Ashe, 82, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, in San Antonio Texas.

Survivors include: her children, Charles Ashe of San Antonio, Texas, Johnny Ashe of Sacramento, Calif., Wayne Ashe of Galt, Calif., Harold Ashe of San Antonio, Texas, and Annette Ashe-Montgomery of Buffalo, N.Y.; siblings, Ethel Knight, John Watkins and Rosalee Stroble, all of Richmond, Va., Sallie Stephens of Hampton, Va., and Archie Watkins of Philadelphia, Pa.; 30 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at 3 p.m., at Union AME Zion Church in Wilton.

The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.

Shirley Baker

WARREN COUNTY — Shirley Baker, 77, of Washington, D.C. (formerly of Warren County), died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at 11 a.m., at Union Grove Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. Norman T. Davis, will officiate and burial will follow in Edwards Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Warrenton.

Survivors include: her husband, James Baker of the home; her daughter, Sonya of Brooklyn, Md.; her son Terry of Upper Marlboro, Md.; her grandson; and two brothers, Pavevo Davis of Las Vegas, Nev., and Charles Davis of Upper Marlboro, Md.

Professional services have been entrusted to Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton.

James E. Bumpass

OXFORD — James E. “Duke” Bumpass, 64, a resident of 7063 Old West Lane, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at Universal Health Care in Oxford.

He was educated within the Granville County School System and was a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include; his mother, Isabelle Bumpass of Oxford; two children, Jamie Bumpass of Burlington and Mitchell Bumpass of Atlanta, Ga.,; five sisters, Mary Ann Green of Oxford, Margaret Burt of Henderson, and Rebecca Anderson, Mary Alice Owens and Betty Yancey, all of Durham; five brothers, Ernest Bumpass Jr. of Raleigh, and David Lee Bumpass, Larry Donnell Bumpass, Andrew Bumpass and Ricky Bumpass all of Oxford; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at 2 p.m., at Olive Grove Baptist Church, with eulogy by the Rev. Mack Timberlake Sr. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Viewing will be Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., at the Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m.

Georgia Exum

WARRENTON — Georgia Exum, 86, of 150 Ridgeway Warrenton Road in Warrenton, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at her residence.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at 2 p.m., at Warren County High School in Warrenton. The Rev. Walter Yarborough will oficate.

Survivors include: her husband, W. E. Exum Sr. of the home; one daughter, Melissa Exum of West Lafayette, Ind.; one son, Eugene Exum of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren; and one brother, John H. Jones Jr. of Chesapeake, Va.

The body will be on view today, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.

Otis L. Harrell

LEXINGTON — Otis Lee Harrell, 87, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012.

The funeral service will be conducted today, at 1:30 p.m., in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel in Greenville. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.

Harrell, a native of Halifax County, lived much of his early life in the Smithfield community. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served on the LST Troop Carrier ship during both World War II and the Korean War. After his military service he lived and worked in the Smithfield community for a number of years and later moved to the High Point community where he retired from Styrex Industries in 1987. He was a member of Meadowview Deliverance Tabernacle in Lexington, where he had made his home since the 1970s.

Those preceding him in death were: his parents, Gus and Georgia Branch Harrell; and brothers, William, Clarence, Ernest and Charles Harrell.

Survivors include: his wife of 35 years, Gladys Harris Harrell; sons, Raymond “Ray” Harrell, and Randy Harrell, both of Henderson, Otis “Sherwood” Harrell of Anacoco, La., and Freddie Harrell and of High Point; daughter, Glenda H. Tallent of San Jose, Calif.; brother, Aaron Glenn Branch Harrell of Zebulon; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, from 6-8 p.m., at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the home of Christy Jones Harris.

Dennis R. Henderson Jr.

GREENVILLE — Dennis Ray Henderson Jr., 44, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

He was born June 20, 1968 in Vance County, the son of Dennis Ray Henderson Sr. and Vinnie Johnson Henderson.

He graduated from Boston High School in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Gethsemane Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kinston.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at 2 p.m., at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ with Pastor Charlie Leath officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his mother, Vinnie Johnson Henderson of Kinston; his father: Dennis Ray Henderson Sr. of Virginia; four children: Rayah, Vanleha S., Dennisha and Ahmed; and one sister: Tonya Talley of Raleigh.

A viewing will take place today, from noon-5:30 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.
The family is receiving friends at the home of Mr. David Johnson, 226 Skenes Dr., Henderson.

Hilda F. Moore

HENDERSON — Hilda Foster Moore, 83, a resident of 2141 158 By-Pass, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by J. M. White Funeral Home.


Nathaniel B. White Sr.

WARRENTON — Nathaniel Boyd “Nat” White Sr., 93, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Born in Vance County, he was a son of the late Henry B. and Susan Boyd White. He was a soil conservationist for the U.S. Government serving in Randolph, Warren and Nash counties, and later was a forestry consultant. He was an elder at Warrenton Presbyterian Church where he was member for 65 years, and was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Navy.

The Rev. Keith Benze will conduct funeral services at 3 p.m., today, at Warrenton Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie Jarvis White; his sons, Nat B. White Jr. and Steve J. White, both of Warrenton, and Henry B. White of Greensboro; his brother, Wallace White of Cincinnati, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Spencer Scott, Pettway Boyd, Travis Pulley, Ted Echols, Nick Bagshawe, Clay Aycock and David White.

The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service today at Warrenton Presbyterian Church from 1-2:30 p.m.

Michael W. Williams

HENDERSON — Michael Wayne Williams, 61, a resident of 1581 Edwards St., died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at his home.

Born on Aug. 9, 1951 in Vance County, he was the son of the late Cecil C. Williams and Maggie Knight Williams. He was formerly employed with Faulkner Roofing Company and Roses Warehouse.

No services are planned.

He is survived by a daughter, Melissa Williams of Arizona; two sisters, Cecelia Peoples and Dianne Harrell, both of Henderson; and two brothers, Randy Williams and Tom Williams, both of Henderson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Williams; one sister, Gail Waddell; and three brothers, Cecil Williams, Steve Williams and Billy Williams.
