Kathleen B. Walker

BULLOCK — Kathleen Brooks Walker, age 89, died Monday, May 6, 2013, at her home at Buckhorn Spring Farm in Bullock.

A native of Person County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Thomas and Lissie Long Brooks and widow of the late Robert Lee Walker.

Kathleen was a member of the Bullock Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Bullock Baptist Church by the Rev. Tony Futrell. Burial will follow in the Royster Cemetery in Bullock. The family will receive friends at the home.

Surviving are; a son, Steven Brooks Walker of Bullock; daughters, Barbara W. Twisdale (Stan) of Bullock, Nancy W. Reese (David) of Townsville and Kathy L. Walker of Bullock; and one brother, John M. Brooks of Baltimore, Md. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Brian Reese (Jennifer), Dale Reese (Sandy), Laura Matthews (Brad), Timothy Twisdale (Amanda) and Kimberly Vincitorio (Michael) Anna Cottrell and Erin Cottrell; and nine great-grandchildren, Alexis Reese, Avery Reese, Carson Reese, Meredith Reese, Madelyn Reese, Tyler Matthews, Hannah Twisdale, Abby Kate Twisdale and Michael Vincitorio. She was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Brooks.

Willis M. Wemyss

WARRENTON — Willis Macon Wemyss, 83, died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at his residence.

Macon was a Warren County native born to the late John Robert and Claude Powell Wemyss. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Thelma M. Robertson, and two brothers, Alton and Perry Wemyss.

Mr. Wemyss was a member of the Norlina Baptist Church where he served as treasurer of Sunday School for 20 years. He was a manager with the ABC System, and he and his wife, Gladys, owned and operated Odom’s Flower Shop and Gladys and Macon’s Florist for many years. Macon was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of the Warrenton Lion’s Club.

Billy Fuller and the Rev. Doug Cutts will conduct memorial services at 11 a.m., Monday, May 13, 2013, at Norlina Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Harris Wemyss; his children, David Craig Wemyss of Warrenton, Jill Harris Wemyss Coleman and husband, Victor, of Inez, and Macon Todd Wemyss and wife, Claudia, of Warrenton; his sister, Mildred Wemyss Paschall of Wilmington; and his four grandchildren, Morgan Leigh Coleman, Levi D. Coleman, Jacob C. Wemyss and Anna Macon Wemyss. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Hill Yancey, Davis Hams, Dee Harris, Holt Smiley and John Foster Robertson; and his close friends, Bobby Thaxton, Jimmy Overby and Dwight Pearce.

In addition to flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Norlina Baptist Church, PO Box 367, Norlina, NC 27563.

The family will meet at Todd and Claudia Wemyss’ residence, from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, May 12, 2013.

Nettie M. Hawley

OXFORD — Nettie Morton Hawley, 86, a resident of 508 Hillsboro St., died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at her residence.

She was the daughter of the late Jack and Nettie Morton.

She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Morgan of Franklinton, Fannie Bass of Oxford and Alma Norwood of Durham; three sons, Johnny Hawley of Butner, Barry Hawley of Oxford and Jimmy Morton of Waldorf, Md.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 9, 2013, at noon at Wright Funeral home. Burial will be in the Allen Family Cemetery in Person County.

A viewing will take place today, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Herbert E. Russell

DURHAM — Herbert Edward Russell, 68, of 445 Sunnyview Road, Henderson, died Friday, May 3, 2013, in Durham.

Born Sept. 30, 1944, in Vance County, he was the son of the late Joseph Russell and Jettie Clark Russell.

He was educated in Vance County Schools, and at an early age, he joined Holy Temple United Holy Church. He later attended Welcome Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where he sang with the male and adult choirs.

He moved to New Jersey where he was employed as a cab driver for many years. He was married to the late Mildred Russell.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 1 p.m., at Holy Temple United Holy Church with the Rev. Dr. Roosevelt AIston, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Saint Silver presiding.

Survivors include: one son, ‘Thaddius Russell of New Jersey; and one granddaughter.

A viewing will take place today, from noon to 6 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Mary Debnam, 445 Sunnyview Road, Henderson.

Brenda P. Self

OXFORD — Brenda Price Self, 64, a longtime resident of Granville County, died Monday May 6, 2013, at the home of her mother.

A native of Granville County she was the daughter of Etta Washington Day Price and the late William Ernest Price. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was self-employed in the cleaning business.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Virgilina Cemetery by the Rev. Norman Talley.

Surviving are a daughter, Tracey Self Greenway of Oxford, seven sisters, Helen Poole of Virgilina, Mattie Lou Hancock, Annette Currin and Charlotte Dickerson, all of Oxford, Wilma Elliott of Smithfield, and Ernestine Chambers and Cathy Taylor, both of Timberlake; one granddaughter; one grandson; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by brothers, Bernard and Elbert Price; and a son, Victor C. Self.

Visitation will follow the graveside service and at other times at the home of her mother.

Willie G. Townes

WARRENTON — Willie Ann Griggs Townes, 87, died, May 5 2013, at Warren Hills Nursing Center in Warrenton.

Born Sept 19, 1925, in Warren County, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Sally Griggs.

Preceding her in death are her sons: Henry and John Townes. 

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 11 a.m., in the R.H. Greene Funeral Home Chapel.  Steve Perry of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness of Warrenton will officiate.

Survivors include five grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.

Maggie A. Woodall

CHAPEL HILL — Maggie Adaline Woodall, infant, died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at the N.C. Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Born Thursday, May 2, 2013, at the hospital, she was the daughter of Bert and Lesley Woodall of Durham.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother, Caleb Woodall, and sister, Ella Woodall; her paternal grandparents; and her maternal grandfather. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother.

A memorial service will take place Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Triangle Presbyterian Church, 5001 Tudor Place in Durham.
