Joseph F. Lassiter

HENDERSON — Joseph Franklin Lassiter, age 87, a resident of 1432 Peace St., Henderson, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at his home.

Born on Sept. 19, 1925, in Vance County, he was the son of the late James Franklin Lassiter and Esther Neal Lassiter. Mr. Lassiter was a veteran of the United States Army 87th Infantry Division serving under General George Patton in the European Theater, and was the recipient of several medals, including the Purple Heart.

He was a retired clerk for the United States Postal Service. A lifelong member of First Congregational Christian Church, he served as a former deacon, trustee, usher, and member of the Men’s Fellowship.

A private burial will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, in the New Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, at 2 p.m., at First Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. George Williams and Dr. Ron Cava.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Ayscue Lassiter of the home; one daughter, Mary Jo Wilson and husband, Frederick H. Wilson, of Henderson; two sons, Larry W. Lassiter and wife, Krista Perry Lassiter, of Wilson, and Robert F. Lassiter and wife, Marilyn Gregg Lassiter, of Henderson; one sister, Mildred L. Wilson of Lake Gaston; seven grandchildren, Jay and Ginger Lassiter, Mandy and Wayne Sullivan, Paige and Wes Hill, Michael and Lisa Harrison, William “Bill” Harrison, Jennifer Lassiter, Kate Lassiter and fiancé, Josh Parker; two step-grandchildren, Rick Wilson and Dan and Elizabeth Wilson; seven great-grandchildren; and two step-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Effie Lassiter Harris; and one great-granddaughter, Abigail Hope Sullivan.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at First Congregational Christian Church and at other times at the home at 1432 Peace St., Henderson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Christian Church, c/o of Sara Davis, 558 Rowland Street, Henderson, NC 27536.

Richard K. Murphy

LOUISBURG — Richard Kelly Murphy, 68, of Louisburg, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013.

He was the son of the late Johnnie Garvis and Wilma Burnette Murphy. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in Vietnam.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Wood Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Murphy Family Cemetery.

He is survived by his daughters, Angie Murphy Brooks and husband, Johnnie, of Louisburg, Tina Murphy Jones and husband, Damon, of Rolesville, and Dee Vaughan and husband, Tyronne, of Morristown, Tenn.; his brother, Bobby Murphy and his wife, Patsy, of Louisburg; his sister, and Margaret Shearin and her husband, Robert, of Henderson; his grandchildren, Meliah Pleasants and Devin Brooks; his great-grandson, Easton Brooks; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made for burial expenses. The family will receive friends Thursday night, Jan. 31, 2013, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Lancaster Funeral and Cremation Services, 804 N. Bickett Blvd., Louisburg. Online condolences may be made to lancasterfcs.com.

HOLLISTER — Nursie Lynch Richardson, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at her home.

Viewing/visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, from 7-8 p.m., at Blaylock Funeral Home in Littleton.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at 2 p.m., at White Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Alonzo West officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

LANHAM, Md. — Dr. Barbara Terry-Koroma, 56, of Lanham, Md., died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, Md.
