SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. — Richard Thomas “Dick” Johnson, age 88, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., passed away June 10, 2013.

He was born Dec. 16, 1924, in Henderson, the son of the late Claude William and Hallie Averette Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister; three brothers; and his first wife, the mother of his three children, Helen Teiser Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his loving wife, Viola Hoyle Johnson; sons, Richard T. “Rick” Johnson Jr. of Lynchburg, Va., Carl H. Johnson and wife, Ellen, of Roanoke, Va.; daughter, Mittie J. Hambrick and husband, P.D., of Union Hall; three grandchildren, Cameron H. Blankenship and husband, Cody, Perry Hambrick and fiancée, Lauryl Anglin, and Brian Hambrick; and two great-granddaughters, Shelby and Avery Blankenship.

A memorial service will be held at Flora Funeral Home in Rocky Mount, Va., on Friday, June 14, 2013, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jim Hight officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held at Christ Community Church, VA 40, Penhook, Va. Burial at Franklin Memorial Park will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Community Church, P.O. Box 100, Penhook, VA 24137.

His family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 13, 2013, at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount, Va.

Gerald L. Wells

HENDERSON — Gerald Lance Wells, 58, of 180 Twelve Oaks Lane, Henderson, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at his home.

Born in Winnebago, Neb., he was the son of the late Schuyler Wells and Mary Roberts Wells.

Mr. Wells was a former store manager at Lowe’s. He was a member of South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church, the Henderson Moose Lodge and the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska.

Surviving are his former wife, Joy Dickerson Wells of Henderson; three daughters, Glynis J.W. Litwin of Greenville, Hayley D.W. Woodcock of Greensboro and Bethany Shea W. Parrish of Henderson; a brother, Larry Wells of Henderson; and eight grandchildren, Brooke Woodcock, Arija Litwin, Caiden Woodcock, Lydia Litwin, Carter Parrish, Alora Litwin, Lyric Parrish and Xander Litwin.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Sue W. Rivers.

No service is currently planned.

Ellen H. Winn

HENDERSON — Ellen Hedgepeth Winn, 83, of the Epsom community, died Tuesday evening, June 11, 2013.

Mrs. Winn was a daughter of the late Rembert and Gussie Hedgepeth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Winn Sr., and her brother, Charles Hedgepeth.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 14, 2013, at Liberty Christian Church Cemetery with Dr. Carolyn Roy officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Mrs. Winn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Rick Edwards of Epsom; son and daughter-in-law, Frankie and Stacey Winn of Raleigh; twin sister, Helen Wilson of Epsom; sister, Isabelle Kennerson of Montville, Conn.; grandchildren, Kris Edwards and Tim Edwards, Melissa Hobby and husband, James; Justin Winn and Melina Winn; and great-granddaughter, Natalie Hobby.

OXFORD — Donald Ray Campbell, 62, a longtime resident of Granville County, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at Granville Medical Center in Oxford.

A visitation is planned for Friday, June 14, 2013, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home.

HENDERSON — Kenneth N. Higgs, 88, a former Vance County resident, died Monday in Jacksonville, Fla.

HENDERSON — George Henry Langley, 91, of 1433 Gillburg Road, Henderson, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at a local nursing home.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 14, 2013, at 3 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. Gary Harper.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
