Elizabeth W. Williams

RALEIGH — Joyce Elizabeth White Oakes Williams, 81, died peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at Duke Neurosciences Medical Pavilion in Durham.

Beth grew up in Rutherford County and was the youngest of eight children. She graduated from Wake Forest University and majored in biology and music. Beth taught piano to many children and adults for 30 years.

She loved to travel, dance and spend time with family and friends. She spent many hours in her greenhouse and doing yard work. She loved to crochet preemie baby hats. Beth was a pillar of strength for her family and truly believed in God, family and country.

She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Charles A. Williams; her stepson, Tom Williams and wife Deborah of Raleigh; her sons, Terry Oakes and wife Cindee, Jeff Oakes and wife Ivette and Eric Oakes; her grandchildren, Christy Cochran and husband Stephen, Jason Williams, and Jennifer and Joshua Oakes; and her great-grandchildren, Abigail and Brandon Cochran and Austin and Caiden Williams.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edgar Pinkney White, mother Laura Koon White, her first husband, William Thomas Oakes and her stepson, Dr. Lynwood Williams.

A funeral will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 7600 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh. The visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Brier Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, per Beth’s request, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 7600 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh, NC 27615.

Sylvia J. Hunt

HENDERSON — Sylvia Joyce Hunt, 77, of 1818 Raleigh Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, in a local nursing home.

Born in Vance County on May 4, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Philip Hunt and Mabel Boyd Hunt.

Sylvia was a homemaker and a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Union Chapel United Methodist Church by Rev. Joe Bostic. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one sister, Ruth Hunt Branch of Henderson; two nephews, James Edward Branch III and wife Sarah of Potomac Falls, Va., and Michael Applewhite and wife Tawyna of Wake Forest; one great-niece, Lauren Rebecca Branch; and one great-nephew, Adam Winder Branch.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at J.M. White Funeral Home and on Saturday immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of Union Chapel United Methodist Church. At other times they will be at the home.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Dale Wilson, Brandon Harris, Woody Evans, Joel Stone, David Stone and Samuel Stone.

Richard T. Davis

MOUNT JULIET, Tenn. — Richard Thomas “Rick” Davis, 63, of 465 Gaywinds Drive, formerly of Henderson, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, in Nashville, Tenn.

Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Jesse Graham Davis and Pauline Hight Davis.

Mr. Davis was a national sales manager for Gard Specialist Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a former member of the Henderson Civitan Club.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at Sunset Gardens by Dr. Marion D. Lark.

There are no immediate survivors.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Larry Holland, Charles Holland Jr., Joe Cowling, Beverly Cowling and Jerry Stainback.

Irma R. White

HENDERSON — Irma Rainey White, 93, of 1010 Dabney Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at UNC Hospitals.

Born in Warren County, she was the daughter of the late Herman Rainey and Ida Robinson Rainey.

She was the widow of Wallace Thomas White.

Mrs. White was a homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Flowers Funeral Chapel by Rev. Edgar Vegera. A private burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

Surviving are two sons, Leonard W. White of Raleigh and John L. White of Chesapeake, Va.; and one grandson, Buddy John White of Chesapeake, Va.

Melinda M. Reams

TOWNSVILLE — Melinda Matthews Reams, 52, of 9445 N.C. 39 North, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at her home.

Born on Jan. 16, 1961, in Vance County, she was the daughter of William T. “Bill” Matthews of Townsville and the late Merna McKinney Matthews.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. John Yount.

She is survived by her husband, Michael G. Reams of the home; two daughters, Katlyn Reams and Ashlyn Reams of the home; two sons, Matthew Reams of the home and Jason Matthews of Clarksville, Tenn.; and one sister, Ramona Matthews of Chapel Hill.

The family will receive friends prior to the service on Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of her father, Bill Matthews, 15781 N.C. 39 North.

Michael R. Brown

WARRENTON — Michael Robert Brown, 14, of 398 Sulphur Springs Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at his home.

Born in Altoona, Pa., he was the son of Jennifer Cimbalista of the home and Alan Michael “Mike” Brown of Henderson.

Michael was a student at Vance Charter School. He was a member of the Beta Club, the National Honor Society, the Henderson Chess Club and Inez Hunting Club.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Flowers Funeral Home Chapel.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Lola Cimbalista-San Juan and Sofia Cimbalista-San Juan, both of the home; a brother, Christopher Cimbalista of the home; his paternal grandmother, Bonna Brown of Johnstown, Pa.; and his maternal grandfather, Robert Cimbalista of Everett, Pa.

Ada A. Carter

NORLINA — Ada Abbott Carter, 80, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at Warren Hills Nursing Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hermas Miller Abbott and Sarah Finch Abbott; and her sisters, Annie Mae Abbott, Mabel A. Stephens, Mary A. Satterwhite and Sara A. Gunter.

Rev. Rod Mullins and Rev. Donnie Perkinson will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Norlina United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Warren Dale Cemetery in Norlina.

Mrs. Carter was a member of Norlina United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and choir member for 52 years. She was a former 30-year employee of Americal.

Ada is survived by five children, Wayne Carter (Pam) of Norlina, Nancy Paschall (Dennis) of Norlina, Mike Carter (Phyllis) of Warrenton, Bob Carter (Brandy) of Warrenton and Kendall Lynn Barber of Drewry; three sisters, Alice Gooch of Norlina, Ruby Warren of Chesapeake, Va., and Linda Leitner of Oxford; five grandchildren, Christopher Michael Carter, Elizabeth Ann Tant, Adalyn Carter, MaKayla Rose Carter and Mason Lane Carter; and six great-grandchildren, Kristina Carter, Lexy Carter, Mark Haislip, Tot Carter, Shaplee Tant and Josh Tant.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. John Baptist Church, Buffalo Junction, Va., by Rev. Earl Terry. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
