Thelma S. Jones
NEW YORK — Thelma Smith Jones, 93, peacefully passed on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at the historic St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Harlem, N.Y.
Arrangements were by Marcus Jackson Funeral Home.
Born in Sumter, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Henry H. Smith and Mabel F. Smith Pogue.
She was a graduate of South Carolina State University and attended Howard University School of Law. She retired from New York City as a social worker. She was active with her church and with the Waverly & Thelma Jones Foundation. She was a supporter of the YWCA and the NAACP. Also, she was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Waverly Pennington Jones Sr., and her son, Waverly P. Jones Jr. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Eugene Smith, Edward Smith and E. Armeta Smith Wells.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her granddaughter, Wendy P. Jones Perry (John); great-grandsons, John, Justo and Johaun; and by one sister, Geneva S. Harris of Henderson. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, godchildren and very special friends.
Graveside services will be held at noon on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Locust Grove Baptist Church in Wise.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services.
OXFORD — Abraham Goode, 79, of 112 Keeneland Drive, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at Granville Medical Center.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, in the Betts & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The body will be on view from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

HENDERSON — Ma’lajor L. Kelly, 13 months, of 40 Randy Yancey Lane, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at Youngs Memorial Holy Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
A private viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. at Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Barbara S. Pilkington
OXFORD — Barbara Saunders Pilkington, 65, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at Wake Medical Center.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, in the Eakes Funeral Chapel by Rev. Tony Broome. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of Christy Pilkington Collier in Henderson.
