Joseph H. Ross
RALEIGH — Joseph Harold Ross, 73, peacefully passed away on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.
He was born on Sept. 17, 1939, in Henderson to Joseph Herman Ross and Virginia Estelle Clark Ross.
Joe graduated from Henderson High School and then N.C. State University with a B.A. in sociology. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for three years in Military Intelligence. Joe spent 27 years with the Raleigh Police Department, from 1960 until 1988. While with the Raleigh Police Department, he served as a beat officer, crime scene investigator and finger print expert. He also worked for the Wake County Sheriff’s Office and the State Capital Police.
Joe also owned and operated JH Ross and Advertisers, a specialty advertising company, from 1981 to present. He also engaged in movie work as a stand-in, extra work actor in industrial films, training films and commercials.
Joe served in many organizations. He was a past vice president of FOP and past member of the board of directors at North Hills Country Club. Joe is a member and vice president of TPA, member of the board of directors of WCTPA, past president of NCIAI, past president of NCFA and active in GOP, as well as a former candidate for N.C. House 34 and mayor of Raleigh.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Judy Henry Ross; children, Katrina Ross West of Charlotte, John H. Ross and wife Michelle of Charlotte, Eliot Legates and wife Gracie of Naples, Fla., Ashley Henry Goble and husband Keith of Cartersville, Ga., and Eric Henry and wife Holly of Calhoun, Ga.; grandchildren, Jeffrey Ross West, Hanna, Nathan, Lilly and Noah Ross, Ella, Presley and Kennedy Goble, and Jordan, Kristen and Morgan Burke; great-granddaughter, Makinleigh Spires; and numerous other loving family members and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh.
A private committal service will be held on Saturday.

Willie J. Edwards
HENDERSON — Willie Joe Edwards, 69, of 3144 Raleigh Road, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at his home.
Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Marvin Plummer Edwards and Jettie Coghill Edwards.
Mr. Edwards was a retired welder. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ by Rev. Tammy Ayscue.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Rachel Poythress Edwards; two daughters, Cheryl Edwards of Louisburg and Jennifer Edwards of the home; three sisters, Nelene Satterwhite of Henderson, Mary Ann Brame of Kittrell and Jenny Bridges of Kittrell; a stepsister, Zara Lamm of Charlotte; a stepbrother, Wadel Harp of Charlotte; and three grandchildren, Stephen Speed, Rebekah Speed and Helayna Edwards.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, M.P. Edwards Jr.; and his grandmother, Cappy Stone.
The family will receive friends at the home, 3144 Raleigh Road, Henderson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ, Youth Fund, c/o Angie Averette, 1811 Brookrun Road, Henderson, NC 27536.

Thelma S. Jones
NEW YORK — Thelma Smith Jones, 93, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
A funeral will be held at noon on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Locust Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Wise by Rev. Kenneth Alexander.
HENDERSON — Raimondo Lacewell, 45, of 705 Gun Club Road, Lot 4, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.
The family is receiving friends at the residence.

James A. Solomon
HENDERSON — James Allen Solomon, 84, of 583 Opie Frazier Road, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at his residence.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at Mitchell Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
The body will be on view from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
