Gertrude D. Newman

HENDERSON — Gertrude Daniel Newman, 97, of 9650 Leyland Drive, formerly of Henderson, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at Memorial Hospital North Park in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Born in Granville County, she was the daughter of the late John Booth and Carson Moss Daniel. She was the widow of William Hurley Newman.

Mrs. Newman was a retired cafeteria manager at Clark Street Elementary School and was a former employee of Leggett’s Department Store. She was a member and former deaconess of First Congregational Christian Church.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. George Williams. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda N. Johnson and husband Tom of Ooltewah, Tenn.; a brother, Richard Daniel of Wake Forest; two granddaughters, Evelyn Johnson Mahoney and husband Ryan of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Tiffany Johnson Birchfield of Antioch, Tenn.; a great-grandson, Noah Mahoney; and many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Lloyd Vick; and three brothers, John Alfred Daniel, Herman Daniel and Lynwood Daniel.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Allan Daniel, Richard Daniel Jr., Bill Johnson, Brain Johnson, Nelson Parrott and Mike Parrott.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Congregational Christian Church, c/o Jean Sams, 1464 Plum Nutty Road, Henderson, NC 27537, or to Brainerd Presbyterian Church, 1624 Jenkins Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.

Lucille J. Davis

RIDGEWAY — Lucille “Mouse” Jones Davis, 66, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

A funeral will be held at noon today, Nov. 2, at the Warrenton Baptist Church by Minister Karen Norwood. Interment will follow in the United Friendship Holy Church of Christ Cemetery in Norlina.

Viewing will be at the church for one hour prior to the service.
