Clyde F. Morgan Jr.

ATLANTA — Clyde Francis Morgan Jr., better known as Sonny, passed away on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, from complications due to a prolonged illness.

Born Jan. 12, 1941, in Henderson, he was the son of Clyde Francis Morgan Sr. and Adele Cahal Morgan.

Sonny spent his early years in Henderson at the local skating rink perfecting his pinball skills before joining the Navy after high school. After his tour, which included a stint at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during the Bay of Pigs, he entered management training for Roses Stores, which allowed him to travel the southeast.

During an assignment in Roanoke, Va., he met Diana Selph, who he married. Together they had three sons. He eventually returned to Henderson in the ‘70s, where he remained for the majority of his life.

He acted in and directed many plays and musicals for the local theater, much as his sons did. He worked for more than 25 years at Barn Door Furniture, a once great manufacturer of furniture in Henderson. Chances are you have sat on a couch or a chair he designed. Your children’s toys have probably been stored in toy chests that started off as a sketch in his office and their bunk beds began their life in his mind.

When Barn Door Furniture closed, he embarked on a new venture and went back to school, earning an associate degree from Vance-Granville Community College in childhood education. When his health took a turn for the worse, he moved to Atlanta to be near his remaining children for the final three years of his life.

He is survived by his sister, Charlene Morgan Hamme of Henderson; his brother, Charles Wallace Morgan of Efland; and his sons, Jeffrey Scott Morgan and Clyde Francis Morgan III of Atlanta.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, Cortland “Buddy True Toe” Morgan; older sister, Frances Morgan Yates; oldest son, Michael Wesley Morgan; and his youngest brother, Dennis Morgan Sr.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Henderson. A time for the service will be announced.
