Roy C. Bradford

CHAPEL HILL — Roy Carmichael Bradford, born in Henderson to Roy Cogshall Bradford and Mae Carmichael Bradford, died peacefully at home early Saturday morning, Oct. 12, 2013, at age 83.

He attended Presbyterian Junior College, served in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a career employee of the Public Service Gas Company of North Carolina for 37 years in the engineering and pipeline design department.

Roy enjoyed movies, jazz, UNC Basketball, ice cream, a good conversation and a dry martini. He loved playing ping pong, tennis and cards with anyone who dared to take him on. Ever the host, he welcomed all people into his home for meals and good conversation; he was a loving, generous man.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Bettie Bradford; three children, Richard Bradford and wife of Hillsborough, Jennifer Bradford Bayer and husband of Hillsboro, Ore., and Rebecca Bradford and husband of Clayton; and three step children, Ben Reckendorf of the home, Karen Abbotts and husband of Chapel Hill and Didi McGuire and husband of Hillsborough; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

The memorial service will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Chapel Hill.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made in Roy’s name to the American Children’s Home of Lexington, 3844 N.C. 8, Lexington, NC 27292.
