Betty T. Vernon

HENDERSON — Betty Turner Vernon, 81, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, after a short battle of declining health.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson.

Born on Nov. 28, 1931, in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Ernest Turner and Edna Hayes Turner. Betty was a loving, loyal and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a wonderful role model and friend to her husband, daughter and grandchildren. She was a gifted homemaker. Home was always a soft place to fall.

Betty was a shareholder of Rose Oil Company and a co-owner of the former Silo restaurant. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church for more than 60 years and she served as a choir member for many years. She was the widow of the late John Ellis Vernon, to whom she was married for 59 years.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel and conducted by Rev. Donald A. Lowery.

Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Angela Vernon Christopher and husband, Lee H. Christopher, II; her grandchildren, L.H. “Chris” Christopher, III, John Vernon Christopher, and Alexis Nicole Christopher all of Raleigh; two sisters, Evelyn Rose Turner Reese of Pennsylvania and her children and grandchildren and Ferebee T. Owens of Henderson and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at J.M. White Funeral Home.

At other times they will be home at 2170 Woodland Road.

Active pallbearers will be Frank Vernon, Richard Bullock, George Rose Watkins, Sam Watkins, Chip Watkins and Trey Watkins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, c/o Leigh Ann Edwards, P.O. Box 974, Henderson, NC 27536.

EDWIN T. WHITE

HENDERSON — Edwin T. White passed away Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.

Born in Vance County and a lifelong resident of Henderson, Mr. White was the son of the late Eddie Gardner White and Blanche Thompson White. He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Linwood Gupton; three sisters, Golda Ayscue, Mary Frances Thompson and Dorothy Hoyle; grandchild, David Coghill; great-grandchild, Joshua Hall; and nephew, Eddie Hoyle.

Mr. White was a former residential real estate broker and Methodist by faith. Mr. White was a 32nd-degree Mason at the Henderson Masonic Lodge and charter member of the Amran Temple.

Mr. White is survived by his wife, Violet Lilly Sauls Gupton White; a daughter, Patricia Gupton Coghill and husband Bill, of Durham; a brother, Bill White and wife Becky, of Henderson; a sister, Marion Bennett, of Henderson; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; twin great-great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery with Rev. Mark Hall officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the cemetery.

James R. Davis

NORLINA — James Robert Davis, 87, of 111 Davis-Hyman Road, Norlina, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. in Coley Springs Missionary Baptist Church.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.

Viewing will be held Sunday, Oct. 13, from 1 to 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

HENDERSON — Howard Junior Perry, Sr., 66, of 4576 Raleigh Road, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Rowland Chapel Christian Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be held Tuesday, Oct. 15, from noon to 6 p.m. at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

WILTON — John “Johnny” Franklin Preddy, 74, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor.

Burial will be in the Strother-Mitchell Cemetery at the Preddy Farm.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 13, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and at other times at the home.
