Louise B. Grissom
HENDERSON — Louise Boone Grissom, 94, of the Epsom community, passed away Monday, June 23, 2014.
Born in Jackson on Oct. 12, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Harvey and Lessie Wright Boone. She was the widow of George Ayscue Grissom.
Mrs. Grissom graduated from Jackson High School in 1936 and from East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville in 1940. She was a dedicated educator, having taught for 34 years in the Vance and Franklin counties school systems.
She retired in 1980 from Aycock Elementary School. She was a member of the North Carolina Education Association, Vance County Retired School Personnel, the North Carolina Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She was the oldest member of Liberty Christian Church, a deacon emeritus, former Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, treasurer of women’s fellowship and choir member.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 26, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Liberty Christian Church, conducted by the Rev. Brandon Russell and the Rev. Tammy Ayscue. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a son, Philip Thomas “Phil” Grissom Sr. and wife Pam of Epsom; a sister, Margaret B. Ashley of Charleston, South Carolina; two grandchildren, Felicia G. Lawrence and husband Scott of Epsom and Philip Grissom Jr. and wife Kristy of Epsom; and five great-grandchildren, Kristen Lawrence, Brandon Lawrence, Thomas Grissom, Bruce Stoudemire and Zak Stoudemire. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Boone.
The family will receive friends today, June 25, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Phil and Pam Grissom, 32 Walter Bowen Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Norman Foster, Matthew Grissom, Wayne Grissom, Wesley Knott, Tony Newton, Wayne Renn, Donald Roberson and Wayne Smith.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Liberty Christian Church for the Smoot Scholarship Fund. Memorials may be mailed to Liberty Christian Church, care of Mattie May, 1897 Epsom-Rocky Ford Road, Henderson, NC 27537.

Avanelle G. Guance
PAULINE, S.C. — Avanelle Gravley Gaunce, 82, of Pauline, South Carolina, died Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 21, 1931, in Liberty, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Carey and Lillie Gilstrap Gravley.
Mrs. Gaunce attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky, received her bachelor’s degree from Limestone College and a master’s degree in elementary education from the University of South Carolina. An avid reader, she taught exceptional children at Whitten Center in Clinton, South Carolina, and in Union County, South Carolina. She was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church, enjoyed the Truth Seekers Sunday School Class and was a choir member. She was also a member of Retired Teachers of Spartanburg County and Spartanburg County BEST Child Evangelism.
Survivors include her children, Deborah Gaunce Huitt, Carol Gaunce Hazel (Rick) and Elaine Gaunce Webb (Larry); and four grandchildren, Karey, Jamie, Justin and Annabelle.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Richard Gaunce, and daughter, Belinda Frances Gaunce.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Philadelphia Baptist Church, 3119 SC 56, Pauline, SC 29374, by the Rev. Charles Eaton. Burial will be in the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery.
The honorary escort will be the Truth Seekers Sunday School Class.

HENDERSON — Dorothy “Dot” Ragland Goode, 80, of 444 Sunny View Road, died Friday, June 20, 2014, at her residence.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2014, at Jones Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Tonya Jones. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 26, in the chapel of Davis-Royster Funeral Service and at the church one hour prior to the service.
