Horace B. Askew Sr.

HENDERSON — Horace Britton Askew Sr., 87, of 73 Erica Lane, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Edgar Wellons Askew and Eddie Lowery Askew.

Mr. Askew was a retired employee of Clayton Homes, Inc. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Living Stones Church of God, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Living Stones Church of God, conducted by Rev. Milton Abbott. Burial with military honors will follow in Sunset Gardens.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Elaine Fields Askew; a daughter, Carolyn A. Vick of Henderson; a son, H.B. Askew Jr. of Henderson; two stepdaughters, Wanda Pendergrass of Henderson and Vickie Harrell and husband Mark of Enid, Okla.; a stepson, James Patrick Marks and wife Tracey of Roxboro; two sisters, Ruth A. Dixon of Wake Forest and Hilma A. Smith of Kittrell; four grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Excell A. Maddox; and two brothers, Elwood “Spider” Askew and Thomas Alfred Askew.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Living Stones Church of God. All other times they will be at the home.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Macon Abbott, Andy Roberson, Harvey Harris, Buster Hicks, David Clark, Marion Pergerson, Don Pulley and Johnny Tant.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Instruments of Shining Hope, c/o South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church, 905 Americal Road, Henderson, NC 27536.

Edith F. Tuck

OXFORD — Edith Nonie Frazier Tuck died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013.

Edith was a native of Person County and was the daughter of the late George Bunyan and Nonie Edith Burchette Ashley.

She was the widow of the late Roy Reynolds Frazier and the late James Floyd Tuck.

She was a homemaker who attended Amis Chapel Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and the choir, a deacon, church custodian and Sunday school teacher. She graduated from Oxford High School and the Fuller Business School.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Amis Chapel Baptist Church by Rev. Terry Howard. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are her daughter, Betsy F. Hart (Bruce) of Kittrell; son, Franklin Frazier (Sherri) of Oxford; stepdaughter, Joyce Oakley (Arnold) of Roxboro; stepson, Ronnie Tuck (Shortie) of Oxford; sister, Esther Mae Ogle (David) of Roxboro; sisters-in-law, Janet Stenson and Frances Griffith, both of Florida, and Gerald Rene Frazier of Oxford; brother-in-law, Clifton Tuck of Florida; grandchildren, Daniel Hart, Joseph Hart, Mitchell Frazier and Chad Frazier; and numerous step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Frazier Hudson.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Betsy and Bruce Hart.

Matthew G. Mayes

WARRENTON — Matthew Garland Mayes, 68, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Coley Springs Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Carson F. Jones Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The body will be on view today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel.

OXFORD — Donald P. Woodlief, 79, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at his home.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church in Kittrell by Rev. Bruce Z. Brooks. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Flowers are accepted.
