James M. Manning

HENDERSON — James Merrill Manning, 75, of 1901 Vicksboro Road, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Universal Health Care in Oxford.

Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Vollie Benjamin Manning and Susie Shaw Morris Manning. He was the widower of Julia Marie Matthews Manning.

Mr. Manning was a retired electrician at a mobile home manufacturing company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 21, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

Surviving are two sons, Steven Manning of Henderson and James Ray Manning of Fuquay-Varina; two sisters, Earline M. Lassiter and Deloris Rose Manning, both of Henderson; three brothers, Jimmy Manning and Tommy Manning, both of Henderson, and Vollie B. “Bennie” Manning Jr. of Maiden; and one grandchild.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Laura M. Deans and Louise M. Ayscue, and a brother, Douglas Manning.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 21, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times they will be at the home of Earline and Ronnie Lassiter, 394 Vicksboro Road, Henderson.

His nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church, 905 Americal Road, Henderson, NC 27536.

Dorothy D. Guzman

OXFORD — Dorothy Daniels Guzman, 72, of Universal Healthcare in Oxford, died Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Granville Medical Center.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Mitchell Baptist Church by Dr. Daniel Lilly. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Viewing is today, March 20, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Davis-Royster Funeral Service and at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family is receiving friends at 743 John St., Henderson.

Verlena C. Hargrove

GREENSBORO — Verlena C. Hargrove, 84, of 3315 Bryson St., died Saturday, March 15, 2014, at her residence.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ by Pastor Charlie Leath. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be Friday, March 20, from noon to 6 p.m. at Davis-Royster Funeral Service and at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family is receiving friends at 3000 Jacksontown Road.
