Magaline C. Bass

HENDERSON — Magaline LaVelle Cash Bass, age 91, of Henderson, passed  
away on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012.

Born in Charlottesville, Va., on Feb. 8, 1921, Magaline graduated from Lane High School in Charlottesville, Va. She was married to David Binford Bass of Moseley, Va., for 60 years, living primarily in Colonial Heights, Va. Magaline worked as a purchasing officer for VA Department of State Police for 25 years. She enjoyed traveling, needlework, volunteering at Petersburg General Hospital, and spending time with family and friends. She was also actively involved in The Order of the Eastern Star, The Order of Amaranth, Woodmen of the World, Petersburg Chapter Number 1, and other local senior citizens groups.

Magaline is survived by her children, Shirley Bass Arrington (William) of Colonial Heights, Va., Robert Howard Bass (Judy - ex) of Henderson, Paula Bass Strickland (Ross) of Nashville; her grandchildren, William (Bill) Lloyd Arrington Jr. (Cathy), Ruthann Bass McComb (Adam), Tracy Bass Ellis (Jessie), Kathryn Bass Rose (Robby), Binford Ross Strickland (Kristina), Matthew Paul Strickland   (Maria), Coley Strickland Smith (Shawn); nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and other family and friends. Magaline was preceded in death by her parents, Troye Edwards Cash and Robert Barksdale Cash of Charlottesville, Va.; her sister, Edythe Cash Adams of Fayetteville, Ark.; and her husband, David Binford Bass of Colonial Heights, Va.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, 18100 Genito Road Moseley, Va., with Dr. Bert Browning of Huguenot Road Baptist Church in Chesterfield County, Va., officiating, assisted by Pastor Lee Ellison of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, from 7-8:30 p.m., at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, and also on Friday from noon-1 p.m. at the church. Pallbearers for the funeral service were her grandsons.

Funeral arrangements were handled by The Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, and Flowers Funeral Home.

Rebecca H. Brame

HENDERSON — Rebecca Henderson Brame, age 101, a former resident of 272 County Club Drive, died Saturday, January 5, 2013, at Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary. Born on October 11, 1911 in Croft, Mecklenburg Co., NC, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Simril McDowell Henderson and Pearl McArtan Henderson. Mrs. Brame was a teacher for many years in Vance County, and was a retired librarian in the Vance County School System. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, Daughters of The American Revolution, Sans Souci Literary Club, and a volunteer for the American Red Cross. She was also a member of The First Presbyterian Church.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Elmwood Cemetery by the Rev. Charles Burton Colson. She is survived by one daughter, Caroline Brame Colson and husband, Willard H. Colson Jr., of Greenville; one son, William H. Brame of Henderson; two grandchildren, Kimberly Colson Edmondson (Thurston) and Charles Burton Colson (Melissa); and eight grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Burton Brame; and one sister, Christian Henderson Bass. Serving as active pall bearers will be Willard Colson Jr., Thurston C. Edmondson III, John Wester, William T. Bartholomew, Herman Davis, George Watkins, David Hicks and Joshua Kelly.

Jean D. Faulkner

HENDERSON — Millie Jean Dixon Faulkner, 87, of 210 Nethery Road, Henderson, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at her home.

Born in Smithfield, she was the daughter of the late Eben Howell Dixon Jr. and Alma Christelle Brady Dixon. Mrs. Faulkner was a retired Bookkeeper and Accountant. An active member of First Baptist Church and the Sunshine Club Sunday School Class, she helped with the children’s choir, and played hand bells and bass clarinet in the ensemble.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at 1 p.m., at First Baptist Church, conducted by the Dr. Ron Cava.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Oscar Fitzgerald “Jerry” Faulkner; three daughters, Jean Wilson and fiancé, Steve Moore, of Anderson, S.C., Ellen Puckett and husband, Wayne, of Henderson, and Chris Faulkner of Hickory; a son, David Faulkner and wife, Regina, of Henderson; an “honorary son,” Tommy Tunstall and wife, Marie, of Henderson; two sisters, Della Tolson of Raleigh and Frances Jones of Cary; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Lynnette Angel, Alma Babcock and Ann Wells; a brother, Robert Dixon; and a nephew, James M. “Jimbo” Tolson.

The family will receive friends at the home, 210 Nethery Road, Henderson.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Tunstall, James Wilson, Bo Puckett, and Christian Lytle.

S. Keith Moss

HENDERSON — Stephen Keith Moss, 37, of 5003 Autumn Drive, Durham, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at his home.

Born in Wake County, he was the son of Wade and Carolyn Moss of Henderson.

Mr. Moss was the Administrator at Fayetteville Gastroenterology Associates and Fayetteville Endoscopy Services, LLC. He was a graduate of Northern Vance High School and Florida State University in 1998 with a degree in Finance. He was a member of Grey Stone Baptist Church in Durham. An avid Florida State fan, he was passionate about his career and family. He loved deep sea fishing, music, playing guitar, and spending time at Emerald Isle.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at 11 a.m., at First United Methodist Church in Henderson, conducted by Dr. John Check and the Rev. Clay Waters.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Michelle Risley Moss; four children, Alex Moss, Ava Moss, Colin Satterwhite, and Marley Satterwhite, all of the home; a brother, Kevin Moss and wife Sarah, of Charlotte; his maternal grandmother, Cora Parham of Henderson; his paternal grandmother, Susie Moss of Henderson; his aunt, Evelyn Parham of Wake Forest; and his dog, Sampson.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Mayland Parham; and his paternal grandfather, W.H. Moss Jr. The family will receive friends in the Parlor at First United Methodist Church immediately following the service. All other times, they will be at the home, 5003 Autumn Drive, Durham.

William L. Ormond

HENDERSON — William Lee Ormond, age 80, a resident of 2550 Flemingtown Road, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Rose Manor Nursing Home in Durham.

Born Oct. 22, 1932, in Greene County, he was the son of the late Melvin William Ormond and Rubelle Aldridge Ormond. Mr. Ormond was a Veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean War. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and American Legion where he was in the Commander’s Club. Mr. Ormond was the owner and operator of Ormond Toys and Novelties, a member of New Sandy Creek Baptist Church and the New Sandy Creek Baptist Men.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at 3 p.m., at New Sandy Creek Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Tim Burgess and the Rev. Dr. Jeff Hensley. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Middleburg Cemetery.

Mr. Ormond is survived by his wife, Nancy Bobbitt Ormond of the home; two daughters, Heather Ormond Perry of Warrenton and Leigh Anne Ormond of the home; three sisters, Linda Ormond of Prince George, Va., Jeanette O. Jackson of Stanley and Christine O. Williams of Huntsville, Texas; two grandchildren, Donald Ray Perry, Jr. and friend, Suzanne Whitten and Allison Renee Perry and friend, Johnathan McLamb, all of Selma; two sisters-in-law, Mollie B. Scerbo and husband, Bernard F. Scerbo, and Joyce B. Carpunky; and a brother-in-law, Malcolm J. Bobbitt Jr. and wife, Betty O. Bobbitt.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie O. Aswell; and two brothers, Melvin Parrott Ormond and Earl Dawson Ormond.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Joseph Doyle Carpunky, James Littleton Carpunky, Malcolm Justis Bobbitt III, Matthew Jordan Bobbitt, William Cameron Gill, Christopher Guille Humphries and Henry Dallas Bobbitt IV. Serving as honorary pall bearers will be members of the New Sandy Creek Baptist Men.

The family will receive friends today, from 7-8:30 p.m., at J.M. White Funeral Home.

Mary W. Wade

HENDERSON — Mary Florine Williams Wade, 88, of 629 Young St., Henderson, died peacefully on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at a local nursing home.

Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Lee Roy Williams and Sallie Lou Hoyle Williams. She was the widow of William Jefferson Wade.

Mrs. Wade attended Middleburg schools and Henderson Business School. She was a former employee of the Carolina Bagging Mill, A&P Grocery Store, and for Vance County Tax Office for 28 years before retiring.

She was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church and the Hassie Clark Sunday School Class.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Island Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Marshall Neathery and the Rev. Doug Addington. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are two sons, William J. “Bill” Wade Jr. of Evanston, Wyo., and Theodore Leroy “Lee” Wade and wife, Barbara, of Henderson; a sister, Lottie W. Jessup of High Point; four grandchildren, Jessica Wade Bannister and husband, Paul, Garrett Wade and wife, Jennifer, Bret Wade and wife, Summer, and Stacey Wade Holland and husband, Jason; and five great-grandchildren, Dalton Bannister, Lauren Bannister, Brooks Wade, Aiden Wade  and Lane Wade. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, James L. Williams.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Ronnie Perkinson, Garrett Wade, Brett Wade, Bob Morgan, Donnie Yarborough, Ralph Stevenson, John Cook and Ben Gay.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times they will be at the home of Lee and Barbara Wade, 2536 Westover Drive, Henderson.

Walter Champion

VANCE COUNTY — Walter Champion, 72, of 665 Vance St., Henderson, died   Jan. 2, 2013, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.

He was born in Vance County and the son of the late King David and Rosa Bell Davis Champion.

He attended the Warren County Public Schools and joined Coley Springs Baptist Church. He was employed with Long’s Pump and Tank Services for over 20 years before retirement.

Funeral services will be today, Jan. 8, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Coley Spring Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Clarence Dale. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Survivors include four daughters, Isabelle Alston, Alice Champion, Mary Lene Fields and Sha’derea Parker, all of Henderson; nine sisters, Deloris Taylor, Mary Jones, Mamie Walker, Rosa Champion, all of New Jersey, Sarah Acevedo, Edna Fogg, Annie Champion, Loretta Champion and Mable Champion, all of Henderson; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends at the resident of Alice Champion, 874 Gun Club Road, Lot 35, and the resident of 665 Vance Street. The body was on view Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., at the Funeral Home and will be again at the church one hour before the service. Arrangements are by Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

HENDERSON — Thomas Theodore Frazier, 78, a resident of 360 Leon Frazier Road, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at his home.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church Henderson by the Rev. Dr. Ronald Cava.

WARREN COUNTY — Carrie Belle Jones, age 55, formerly of Warren County, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at HCA Virginia Health System in Richmond, Va.

Tonya L. Lyons

BUTNER — Tonya F. Lindsey Lyons, 52, a resident of 113 Ridge Road, died Sunday at Durham Regional Hospital.

She was the daughter of Dossie Wumbush Lindsey and the late Vasper Lindsey. She was an educator.

She is survived by a daughter, Stephanie O. Lyons, Greensboro; an adopted son, Danone Thomas Lindsey, Riverview, Fla.; her mother, Dossie W. Lindsey, Oxford; four brothers, James T. Lindsey, Greensboro, George Douglas Lindsey, Virginia Beach, Va., Nathaniel Lindsey, and Eugene Lindsey both of Oxford; four sisters, Doris M. Outlaw, Marcia L. Brothers, Norfolk, Va., Virginia D. Lindsey and Gloria Y. Lindsey, both of Butner; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at 1 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Michael Alston. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to services at Wright Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of Dossie Lindsey, 6671 U.S. 15 North, Oxford.

Theodore H. Moss

OXFORD — Theodore H. Moss died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Granville Medical Center.

He was a native of Granville County, and was the son of the late Ollie Hayes and Tazzie Blackley Moss. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, and a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the World War II Victory Medal and the Occupation Medal. He was a member of West Oxford Baptist Church, a former Sunday school teacher, deacon and member of the choir. He graduated from John Nichols in 1944. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at 2 p.m., in West Oxford Baptist Church by the Rev. Wes Garner. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Surviving is his wife, Carolyn Finch Moss; sons, Paul Moss of Rougemont, Gaylon Moss of Cary and Creighton Moss of Raleigh; seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, Tom Moss and Bennie Hugh Moss.

The family will receive friends today, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.

HENDERSON — Debra Judkins Robinson, 56, a resident of Kerr Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013.

Edna R. Tippett

BUTNER — Edna Earl Riggs Tippett, 83, a longtime resident of Butner, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Universal Healthcare in Oxford.

A native of Durham County, the daughter of the late Ervin Ulysses and Lillian Ferrell Riggs. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Butner, a graduate of Freewill Baptist College in Nashville, Tenn., and was a superintendent of a Children’s Home in Turberville, S.C.

She was also a graduate of Watts School of Nursing and was employed at Murdoch Center in Butner for over 30 years.

Funeral Services will be conducted today, at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church in Butner by Dr. Mack Thompson and the Rev. Lenny Rogers.

Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor.

Surviving are her son, David H. Corn of Kittrell; two sisters, Julie Parrott and Jean Walker, both of Durham; a brother, Rudy Riggs of Timberlake; three granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a son, Derek Tippett.

Visitation will be held today, from 12:30-2 p.m., prior to the service in the fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church in Butner.

Amos D. Williams

VANCE COUNTY — Amos Daniel Williams died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

Born Sept. 14, 1932, in Vance County, he was the son of the late James and Hallie Pearl Terry Williams.

He was retired and had worked at Roses Warehouse for several years.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Nellie Gray Williams; six children, Amos E. Williams, Everlyn J. Graves, Michael J. Williams, Dorothy Owens, Patricia F. Carr and Gregory A. Williams; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at 2 p.m., at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service Chapel and interment will follow in the Mitchell Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Louisburg. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service from 6-7 p.m. and other times at 250 N. Pinkston St., Henderson.

Floralbearers and pallbearers will be family friends.

Callah E. Yancey

HENDERSON — Callah Elise Yancey, infant daughter of Lionel and Sbadiyah Yancey, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

She was born Dec. 11, 2012, in Vance County.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at noon, in the chapel of Davis-Royster Funeral Service, with Pastor Deborah Burwell officiating. Interment will follow in Blacknall Cemetery.

Survivors include her parents and one brother, Braylin Yancey of the home; six grandparents; and six great-grandparents.

Viewing will be held today, from noon to 6 p.m., at the funeral home.
