Evelyn Murray

RALEIGH — Evelyn Murray, age 94, a resident of Universal Health Care in Raleigh, and a former resident of Lynne Avenue in Henderson, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at the William Dunlap Hospice Center in Raleigh.

Born in Granville County on Feb. 23, 1918, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas Murray and Mary Fannie Oakes Murray. She was a retired accounting clerk with the former Roses Stores, Inc. Miss Murray was a graduate of Henderson Business College and was a member of West End Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at 2 p.m., in the J. M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ralph McGowan. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Oxford.

She is survived by her niece, Amy Stainback Myrick and husband, Paul Myrick, of Warrenton; and her nephew, William L. “Bill” Stainback and wife, Ferebee Poythress Stainback, of Raleigh; one sister-in-law, Edna Freeman Murray of Greensboro; and numerous third, forth and fifth generation nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Stainback and Amy Murray; two brothers, Ernest Murray and Ralph Murray; and a great-great-nephew, Daniel Franklin Giddens III.

The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, from 12:30-2 p.m., at J. M. White Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 200 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Alice G. Smith

HENDERSON — Alice Green Smith passed away on Dec. 29, 2012, in Washington, D.C.

She was the oldest child of the late William and Annie Henderson Green, born in Henderson.

She was preceded in death by family members Jenny G. Fletcher, Katie Green and Hattie Holmes, Dr. James P. Green, Mary Green, Sidney Green, Leola Green and William Green Jr. She was married to the late Harrison Smith.

She was a Christian and an esteemed educator who possessed and demonstrated great love for children.
Surviving are three sisters, Annie G. Ponds, Eva G. Donaldson and Margaret G. Labot; one sister in law, Carolyn Green; and although she had no children of her own, she was greatly admired by six nieces, Elizabeth Ponds, Adrian Katherine Ponds, Deborah Ponds, Margaret Dearson, Jean Holmes, Sonya Donaldson and Carolyn Green; nephews, Johnny Ponds Jr., Richard Ponds, William Ponds, Iyland Holmes, Jerome Holmes, Issac Green, Kenneth Donaldson, Keith Donaldson, Robert Middleton Jr. and Randolph Green; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will take place today, at 11:30 a.m., at Elmwood Cemetery with the Rev. Gordon Marshall officiating.

Services have been entrusted to E.C. Terry’s Funeral and Cremation Service.

DELCO — Lizzie Roberson Caraway, 90, a resident of 98 Dew Oil Plant Road, and a former resident of Kelly Road in Henderson, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at New Hanover Medical Center in Wilmington.

The family will be at the home of Mary C. Sanford at 1151 Walter Bowen Road.

FRANKLINTON — Lucy Foster, 75, of 50 Highland Drive, Franklinton, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Hillside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wake Forest.

Mary F. Fuller

HENDERSON — Mary Frances Fuller, 97, died Jan. 1, 2013.

Born Aug. 24, 1915, to the late Nina Richardson, she was educated in the Franklin County Schools and was a faithful member of Greater Little Zion Holiness Church.

She was married to the late Douglas Lee Fuller.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Greater Little Zion Holiness Church with Pastor Brenda G. Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in Blacknall Cemetery.

Survivors include: five daughters: Lucille Hanable of Brooklyn, N.Y,, Mary Etta Fuller and Arlene Fuller, both of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Pearlie Kearney and Shirley Henderson, both of Henderson; and 14 grandchildren.

A viewing will take place today, from 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Dorothy K. Gill

WARRENTON — Dorothy Bell Kearney Gill, 67, of 739 Geneva Drive, Warrenton, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, in Newark, N.J.

She was born in Warren County on Jan. 5, 1946, to the late Vernon Kearney and Katie Lee Pitchford Kearney.

She attended Warren County Public Schools and graduated from John R. Hawkins High School.

She was employed with Americal and Southern Quilter until her health declined.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Coley Springs Baptist Church with Pastor Carson Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters: Vonda Kirkpatrick of Henderson and Crystal Small of Warrenton; one sister, Katie Mae Richardson of Newark, N.J., one brother, Thorton Perry of Henderson; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

John W. Mayfield

NORLINA — John Wayne Mayfield, 48, of 110 Brown Circle in Norlina, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, in Durham.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Bethlehem Christian Church in Manson. The Rev. Kathard Marks, pastor, will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He is survived by three sons, Kevin Jones and Terrence Jones, both of Norlina, and James Clark of Nashville; four grandchildren; his mother, Jennie Mayfield of Norlina; two sisters, Mary Jones and Maxine Henderson, both of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, William Mayfield of Norlina and Gary Mayfield of West Virginia; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The body will be on view today, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.

Queen M. Webb

WARREN COUNTY — Queen Marie Webb died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at Senior Citizens Nursing Home in Henderson.

Born June 7, 1924, in Warren County, she was the last surviving child of the late Hugh and Pattie Taylor Powell.

Webb was educated in the Warren County Public School System, graduating from John R. Hawkins High School, and receiving post high school instruction in secretarial school.

Baptized at an early age, she became a missionary at Shiloh Baptist Church. She sang in the choir, performing many solos.

She was united in holy matrimony to Garland Webb, her childhood sweetheart, who preceded her in death in 2004.

In 1944, the couple relocated to New York where Webb worked as a personal assistant to Rose Morgan, and as a receptionist in the New York City Department of Social Services.

Webb was a member of Lions Club International of Raleigh and transferred to Lions Club International of Warrenton upon their return to the area in 1987.

In addition to her parents and husband, those preceding her in death included her siblings: Elijah, Eunice, Josie, Bessie, Edith, Eliza Jane, Arthur, Eugene and an infant sister.

The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at 2 p.m., from Shiloh Baptist Church, located in the Arcola community of Warren County. The Rev. Kenneth Richardson, pastor, will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

She is survived by a host of loving relatives and friends.
Webb may be viewed today in the R. H. Greene Funeral Home Chapel, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., and at the church one hour prior to the service.
