Eva Alston

HENDERSON — Eva Alston, 93, a former resident of Kindred Healthcare in Henderson, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013.

Arrangements will be announced by Davis-Royster Funeral Service.


Douglas R. Beute

HENDERSON — Douglas Russell Beute, 48, of 60 Sandpiper Lane, Manson, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at his home.

Born in Grand Rapids, Mich., he was the son of Marvin Kenneth Beute and Sherlene Russell Beute of Raleigh.
Beute was a former building supply salesman.

No service is currently planned.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sons, Derek Russell Beute and Daniel Martin Beute, both of Vandermere; and a sister, Dana B. Townley of Raleigh.

Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.


Phyllis Cheek

WARRENTON — The Rev. Phyllis Cheek, 56, of Warrenton, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Duke University Hospital in Durham.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time, but will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton.

Walter Clark

HENDERSON — Walter “W.C.” Clark, 67, of 345 Booth St., Henderson, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

He was born on April 27, 1945, to Sandy and Mary Tuck Clark.

He joined Ashley Grove Baptist Church in Henderson at a young age. He was educated in Vance County Schools, where he attended Carver Elementary School and graduated from Henderson Institute in 1964.

He was employed at various jobs during his life, including Harriet and Henderson. He spent most of his employment at J.P. Taylor, where he retired after over 25 years of service.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Progressive Faith Missionary Baptist Church, with Pastor Brenda G. Peace officiating. Interment will follow in Blacknall Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Alston Clark, and his mother, Mary Tuck Clark, both of Henderson; two sons, Erick Watkins and O’Brien Clark, both of Henderson; six daughters, Sonia Young, Tammy Alston, Wendy Henderson, Nicole Clark, Dorothy Wiggins and Yolanda Henderson, all of Henderson; five sisters: Mary Travis of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Helen Johnson and Maggie Wilkerson, both of Henderson, Bettie Dalton of Statesville and Delois Clark of Pompano Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Joseph Clark of Radcliff, Ky., and Alex Clark of Henderson; 30 grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

A viewing will take place Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, from 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family is receiving friends at 412 Harriett St., Henderson.

Sallie Lewis

OXFORD — Sallie Lewis, 96, a resident of 215 Wilmington Ave., Oxford, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Brantwood Nursing Center.

She attended the Granville County Schools and was a member of Baptist Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include; one son, Shelton “Rudy” Lewis of the home; one daughter, Thelma “Bonnie” Reed of Durham; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at 10 a.m., at Baptist Grove Baptist Church with a eulogy delivered by the Rev. Ollie F. Ellison. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.

A viewing will take place today, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends at 215 Wilmington Ave., Oxford.

Services have been entrusted to Betts & Son Funeral Home in Oxford.

James E. Long

BUTNER — James Edward Long, 72, a resident of 605 29th St., died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Universal Healthcare in Oxford.

Arrangements will be announced by Wright Funeral Home.


Mattie M. Scott

OXFORD — Mattie May Scott, 93, a resident of Universal Healthcare, Oxford, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013.

She was born the daughter of the late James and Alice Marrow Scott. She joined Philadelphia Baptist Church at an early age. She was educated in the Vance County Public School System. She lived in Baltimore, Md., for a period of time with her relatives.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at 1 p.m., at Philadelphia Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

There are no immediate survivors.

A viewing will be held today, from noon-6 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Hattie I. Williams

HENDERSON — Hattie Ingram Williams, 97, a resident of 1002 Pinkston St., Henderson, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

She was the widow of the late Allen Williams, and former owner and founder of Williams Funeral Home.

She was a retired school teacher and volunteer at Maria Parham Hospital.

She is survived by a sister, Rosa I. Paschall of Henderson; and a brother, John Ingram of Newport News, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at 11:30 a.m., at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph Ratliff. Burial will be in the Coley Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

A viewing will take place today, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford. The family will receive visitors 30 minutes prior to services at Shiloh Baptist Church.
