Douglas E. “Gene” Stokes

HENDERSON — Douglas Eugene “Gene” Stokes, 63, of 469 Eaves Road, Henderson, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Douglas Lee Stokes and Harriett Ayscue Stokes.

Mr. Stokes was a retired employee of the North Carolina Department of Transportation and was a former employee of Dixie Grocery and Edwards Grocery. He was a member of Liberty Christian Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2013, at Liberty Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Bryan Breland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Orr Stokes; a son, Jonathan E. Stokes of Henderson; a sister, Linda S. Cooke of Walterboro, S.C.; and a grandson, Jaxton H. Stokes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Teresa S. Mangum.

The family will receive friends Monday, Nov. 25, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home, 469 Eaves Road, Henderson.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Chris Renn, Philip Grissom Jr., Mike Ayscue, Randy Kearney, Jeff Bowes, Mike Eaves, Bobby Orr and Jonathan Renn.

Flowers will be accepted, or memorials can be made to Liberty Christian Church, c/o Mattie May, 1897 Epsom-Rocky Ford Road, Henderson, NC 27537.

HENDERSON — Marie Hunt, 96, of Kerr Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2013.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at Youngs Memorial United Holy Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Arrangements are by Davis-Royster Funeral Service.



Walter D. Turner

WARRENTON — Walter D. Turner, 94, recently living at Magnolia Gardens, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2013.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, at Greenwood Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie W. Lawrence delivering the eulogy. Internment will follow in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be held on Sunday, Nov. 24, in the R.H. Greene Funeral Home Chapel from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., and at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.
