Clarence Ray Jr.

HENDERSON — Air Force retiree Clarence Ray Jr., 81, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2013.

He was born in Vance County on Jan. 2, 1932, to Clarence and Mabel Gattling Ray.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Hawkins Ray; three children, Clarence Ray III, Lisa Ray Harrison and Kimberly Ray McNeil; and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 21, at the Hawkins Family Cemetery at 3228 Sims Bridge Road.

Arrangements are by E.C. Terry’s Funeral and Cremation Service.

Alice A. Gooch

NORLINA — Alice Marie Abbott Gooch died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hermus Miller Abbott and Sarah Finch Abbott; her husband, Arthur Gooch; and her sisters, Annie Mae Abbott, Mabel A. Powell, Mary Anne Satterwhite, Ada A. Carter and Sarah T. Gunter.

Alice was a member of Norlina United Methodist Church. She was employed at Nunnery Freeman BBQ.

Rev. Rod Mullen and Rev. Donnie Perkinson will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Norlina United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Warrendale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral.

Mrs. Gooch is survived by three children, Gene Evans of Nashville, Bobby Evans of Chester, Va., and Richard Herron of Roanoke Rapids; one stepson, Randy Herron of Darlington, S.C.; two sisters, Ruby A. Warren of Chesapeake, Va., and Linda T. Leitner of Oxford; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Carter, Mike Carter, Bob Carter, Dennis Paschall, Mark Evans and Jordan Evans.

Irma G. Montgomery

HENDERSON — Irma Lee Gregory Ligon Montgomery, age 82, a resident of 411 South Lynnbank Road, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at her home.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Jan. 21, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Ingram Park Gregory and Ruby Christelle Gregory and was raised by her maternal grandmother, Rosie Lee Towe. She attended the Cincinnati public school system and lived in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area until 1971, when she and her family moved to Durham and lived in the Parkwood community until her husband’s retirement. The couple moved to Henderson, where she lived until the Lord called her home. She was forgiven of her sins by Jesus Christ in August 1958 at Landmark Baptist Temple in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has enjoyed her fellowship with her Lord and Savior ever since.

Mrs. Montgomery was a homemaker and attended Raleigh Road Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, at noon in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Memorial Park in Durham.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, James Walter Montgomery of the home; one daughter, Kathleen Ann Ligon and fiance Julius Walters of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sons, Michael Ray Ligon of Henderson, Steven Carr Ligon and wife Susan of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Raymond Lee Ligon and girlfriend Mary Ann Boshart of Durham; a stepdaughter, Randi Boyle of Cincinnati, Ohio; a foster daughter, Tammy Cates of Burlington; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Romana Lee Ligon; one son, David Lee Ligon; one sister, Yvonne Van Vleek; one brother, William Hicks; and a stepson, Jeffrey Montgomery.

The family will receive friends Saturday prior to the service from 10:30 a.m. to noon at J.M. White Funeral Home.

Terry J. McDowell

OXFORD — Terry Jo McDowell, age 49, a resident of 301 Harris Street, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at the Durham Veterans Affairs Hospital.

Born in Warren County on April 4, 1964, she was the daughter of William Harold McDowell and Sandra Neal McDowell of the home. Terry was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the office manager of the former B&M Body Shop.

A graveside funeral service will be held Friday at noon in the Fairview Cemetery in Warrenton, conducted by Rev. Cam Ford.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her paternal grandmother, Odessa McDowell of Warrenton.

The family will receive friends Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at J.M. White Funeral Home.

Jasper W. Dixon Sr.

GRIFTON — Mr. Jasper Willis “Pete” Dixon Sr., 82, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2013.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, Nov. 22, at 3 p.m. in Grifton Cemetery. Burial will follow in the Grifton Cemetery.

Mr. Dixon, son of the late Jasper Thomas and Rosa Banks Dixon Harrelson, was a graduate of East Carolina University with a B.S. in accounting. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. He later was employed for 28 years with Grifton Fertilizer and Supply Company, while also being a tax accountant. He was a member of Grifton Free Will Baptist Church, where he was active in many roles.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Dixon will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Allie Bowen Dixon; his daughter, Gina Limer and husband Mike of Henderson; his son, Jasper W. “Pete” Dixon Jr.; his grandchildren, Chase, Anna, Dana and Mike Jr.; his brother, Kay; and his sisters, Margaret and Peggy.

The family will receive friends at Grifton Free Will Baptist Church prior to the service from 2 to 3 p.m.
