Alex H. Hancock

OXFORD — Alex H. Hancock, 80, died Friday Nov. 8, 2013, at his home.

He was a native of Granville County and the son of the late Franklin Wills Hancock Jr., and Lucy Landis Hancock. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tapp Latta Hancock.

Alex was a graduate of Oxford High School and Fishburne Military Academy in Waynesboro, Va. He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

Alex was a retired contractor and former owner of Hancock Construction Company. As a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, he had served as senior warden, junior warden and a vestryman. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Funeral services will be conducted on Nov. 24, 2013, at 1 p.m. in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church by Rev. James Phal.

A private burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery.

Surviving are a daughter, Gladys Tapp Hancock of Bakersville, Calif; a son, Franklin Eric Hancock and wife Tricia; four grandchildren, Alexander Wills, Charles Franklin, Katherine Latta and Elizabeth Anne Hancock of Tampa, Fla., brother Robert Denard Hancock of Oxford, and sister Lucy Hancock Moore of Oxford.

He was preceded in death by brothers Franklin Wills Hancock III, Charles Hamlin Hancock and sisters Mariana Hancock Kuester and Lizzie Hancock Falkner.

The family will receive friends after the service in the Parrish Hall of the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephen’s Memorial Committee, 140 College St., Oxford, NC.

Arthur L. Ellis Sr.

ATLANTA — Arthur Lee Ellis, Sr., 64, of Vance County, died Nov. 6, 2013, at Emory Midtown Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at St. James Missionary Baptist Church.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be held from noon to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

LOUISBURG — Donald R. Fuller, Sr., 79, of Louisburg, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at his home.

Vycillars Hargrove Jr.

NORFOLK — Vycillars Hargrove, Jr., 70, of 827 W. 42nd St., died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at Sentara Hospital in Norfolk, Va.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Burchette Chapel Baptist Church United Church of Christ, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

Robert Mitchell

PLYMOUTH — Robert Mitchell, 74, of 530 Monroe Street, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at Washington County Hospital.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, at Woodsworth Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

A viewing was held Saturday, Nov. 9, in Plymouth and will continue today in the chapel of Davis-Royster Funeral Service from noon to 5:30 p.m.

HENDERSON — Mrs. Chris Allen Williams, 52, of 271 S. Beckford Drive, Henderson, died at her home Friday, Nov. 8, 2013.
