Mable M. Darden

FAYETTEVILLE — Mable McDaniel Williford Darden, age 103, of Carolina Inn, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012.

She was born on Oct. 24, 1909, in Bladen County to the late William James McDaniel and Lu Anna Page McDaniel.

Mrs. Darden was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Earl Williford. She was married to Mr. Williford in 1928 and came to the Eastover community. Mrs. Darden is survived by her son, Dr. Robert Williford and wife, Linda B. Williford, of Asheboro; her daughters, Dr. Martha W. Zollicoffer and husband, John H. Zollicoffer Jr., of Henderson and Marianna W. McCauley and husband, Albert O. McCauley, of Fayetteville. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Kappy W. Yates, Peggy Dee Williford, Hannah J. Youngblood, Darden Jenkins, Page J. Partin, Williford McCauley, John McCauley and Mary Martha M. Hardison; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Darden was also preceded in death by her second husband, Benjamin A. Darden.

Mrs. Darden was a sales associate for Holmes Electric Company for 15 years. She was the director of the Cape Fear Medical Center in the early 60’s and served on the Board Of Directors for Cape Fear Hospital. In 1965, she was appointed to the Confederate Woman’s Home Board of Directors by Gov. Dan K. Moore. She became the superintendent of the home in 1966 and remained in such position until her retirement in 1976.

Mrs. Darden was active in the Eastover community, especially with her garden club and Salem Methodist Church for which she also served on the board of trustees.

She was a charter member of the Cape Fear Botanical Garden and remained active in its promotion and progress.

She derived great joy in finding opportunities to meet people and developed many lasting friendships throughout Cumberland County. Even in her later years she maintained her interest in politics, and world and community activities. She remained a friend and confidant to many, especially to her grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held today, at 3 p.m., at Salem Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens, 536 North Eastern Bend, Fayetteville, NC 28301 or the Salem Methodist Church, 2171 Middle Road, Fayetteville, NC 28301.

HENDERSON — William Henry “Dick” Bullock Jr., 75, of 555 Evans Road, Henderson, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Kerr Lake Nursing Center.

VANCE COUNTY — Jacqueline Denise Seward Cozart, 51, a Vance County native, died in Killen, Texas.

Dorothy Hunter

WARREN COUNTY — Dorothy Hunter, 87, of Norfolk, Va. (formerly of Warren County), died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Va.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time but will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton.

Jessie Oliver

OXFORD — Jessie Oliver, 88, a resident of 4691 Belltown Road, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at her home.

She is survived by a daughter, Billie Perry of the home.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at 2 p.m., at Mt. Zion Holy Church by the Rev. Patrick Jackson. Burial will be in the Meadowview Memorial Park.

A viewing will be held Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home.

Queen Ragland

OXFORD — Queen Ragland, 83, a resident of 8148 Charlie Stovall Road, Oxford, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at her residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Lester L. Richard

CREEDMOOR — Lester Lee Richard, 82, a longtime resident of Granville County, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at his home.

A native of Granville County, he was the son of the late Archie and Cellie Keith Richard. He was of the Baptist faith, a veteran of the United States Army, a member of Creedmoor Lodge No. 499 and was a retired superintendent at Duke Golf Course in Durham.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at 2 p.m., at the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by Dr. Marc Tilley and the Rev. Alvin Thomas. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Ella G. O’Neal Richard of the home; two daughters, Susan R. Dickerson of Oxford and Pamela R. McFalls of Creedmoor; two sons, Randy L. Richard of Creedmoor and Donnie Richard of Louisburg; two sisters, Christine R. Ross and Betty Lou Ellington, both of Creedmoor; four brothers, Bobby Richard, Donald Richard and Otis Richard, all of Creedmoor, and Harold Richard of Wake Forest; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Junior, Charlie and Ray Richard.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, from 12:30 -2 p.m., prior to the service at the Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and at other times at the home.

HENDERSON — Linwood M. Shields, 80, a resident of 1599 Ruin Creek Road, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at Durham Medical Center, Durham.
