Earl T. Green

NEWTON — Maj. Earl “Boompa” Taylor Green, NCSHP (ret.), went to celebrate Christmas with Jesus on Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at his residence.

He was born in Granville County, the son of Earl and Gussie Gooch Green. He was an active member of Christ Baptist Church in Raleigh, but since moving to the Newton area he was cared for as a member of the New Testament Christian Fellowship. He retired in 1985 from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, attaining the rank of major, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. A member of the N.C. Retired Troopers Association, he was a graduate of the FBI Academy at Quantico, Va., and Northwestern University Center for Public Safety in Evanston Ill. An honest, orderly person who was straightforward, he loved to work in the yard and keep his cars clean. A devoted family man who was about doing what was right; he lived his life as a testimony of his love and faith in Christ Jesus. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marjorie Green; two sons, the Rev. Barry Green and wife, Ann, of Roanoke, Va., and Glenn Thomas Green of Morganton; a daughter, Theresa Boyd and husband, Paul, of Newton; a sister, Ann Rutherford of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Jesse Boyd and wife, Jamie, of Vale, Matthew Boyd and wife, Kelly, of Claremont, Anna Wallace and husband, Jeremy, of Conover, Joshua Green of Roanoke, Va., and Meredith Green of Roanoke, Va.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Lakeview Baptist Church by the Rev. Jesse Boyd and the Rev. Barry Green. Entombment will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

HENDERSON — John Thomas Gregory, 83, of 31 Tucker Circle, Boydton, Va., died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late William Thomas Gregory and Jennie Pendergrass Gregory.

Mr. Gregory was a retired journeyman lineman. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a mMason and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the American Legion and the Thursday Senior Bowling League. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church in Palmer Springs, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at 2 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Charles Davis and Joey Tucker. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Frink Gregory; two daughters, Beth Gregory and husband, Scott Davilla, of Hillsborough, and Patricia G. McGurrin and husband, Kenny, of Hankins, N.Y.; a son, Stephen H. Gregory and wife, Diane, of Owego, N.Y.; two step-daughters, Rhonda Keith and husband, Michael, of Wake Forest and Tamara Radcliff and husband, Greg, of Hopewell, Va.; a step-son, Jim Minchew of Panama City Beach, Fla.; four sisters, Wyoma “Becky” Slootweg of Richmond, Va., Ester Mae “Susie” Justice of Mechanicsville, Va., Martha Ann Lumpkin of Hopewell, Va., and Rachel Priscilla “Cindy” Cunningham of Upatoi, Ga.; two brothers, Samuel Gaius Gregory of Boydton, Va., and William Andrew Gregory of Henderson; four grandchildren, Christopher Yoshida of Durham, John Gregory of Vestal, N.Y., Matthew Gregory of Columbia, S.C., and Stephen Gregory of Owego, N.Y.; and three great-grandchildren, Donavon Yoshida, Keira Yoshida and Dylan Gregory. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Nell Hunt “Bobbi” Gregory; his son, William Thomas “Tommy” Gregory; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Gregory; and a brother, James Dewey Gregory.

The family will receive friends today, from 1-2 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home, 31 Tucker Circle, Boydton, Va.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Christopher Yoshida, John Gregory, Matthew Gregory, Stephen Gregory, Scott Davilla, and Kenny McGurrin.

HENDERSON — Robert Hooker Duncan, 69, of 6514 Alvis Brooks Road, Oxford, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at his home.

Born in Wake County, he was the son of the late James Duncan and Margaret Hooker Duncan.

Mr. Duncan was a former officer with the Henderson Police Department, and was a United States Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Enon Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at 11 a.m., at Enon Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Steve Brown and the Rev. Jim Shelly. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Jean Puckett Duncan; four daughters, Bobbi Duncan Gastler and husband, Robert, of Chesapeake, Va., Renee Emory and husband, Mike, of Creedmoor, Melinda Adcock and husband, Mike, of Oxford, and Darlene Hanford and husband, Robbie, of Henderson; a son, Wayne O’Brien and wife, Kathy, of Oxford; a brother, William Duncan and wife, Sandra, of Raleigh; nine grandchildren, C.J. Nalevaiko, Catherine Gastler, Heather Emory, Katie Emory, Stephanie Evans, Erika Covert, Robin Hanford, Brandon Hanford and Catlyn O’Brien; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Duncan Jr.

Mary J. Pearce

MOREHEAD CITY — Mary Jo Pearce, 89, of Morehead City, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at her home in Morehead City.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date.

Mrs. Pearce was born in Vance County, the daughter of the late Mary and Alvis Husketh. She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Woman’s College) in 1944. She managed Roth Stewart Company, a retail clothing store in Henderson, for over 30 years.

Special thanks go to caregivers, Pam, Lynn, Bea, Bonnie, Dede and Brandi for all the loving care given to Mrs. Pearce over the last four years.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Bert Pearce and wife, Laura, of Newport; granddaughters, Lauren and Blair Pearce; niece, Cathy Carlton and husband, Dana, of Westlake Village, Calif.; great-niece, Janie Myers and husband, Gavin, of New York City, N.Y., and great-niece Jennifer Carlton of New York City, N.Y.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Pearce was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Rubert B. Pearce Jr.

Glen A. Pierce

HENDERSON — Glen Alan Pierce, age 29, a resident of 144 Lynnhaven Ave., died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

Born on Aug. 5, 1983, in Los Angeles, Calif., he was the son of Lore Nohles Lis of Sunland, Calif., and David Alan Pierce of Henderson.

He was a former correctional officer for the prison in Warrenton.

Services will be held at a later date in California.

His parents, David Pierce and Lore and Steve Lis, would like to thank the staff of the Maria Parham Medical Center Oncology Department and all of the “Angels” on the Surgical Unit for their devotion in caring for Glen. He leaves behind countless family and friends who will miss him greatly.

HENDERSON — Lawrence Elmore Stevenson, 84, of 953 Buckhorn St., Henderson, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at his home.

Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Clarence Elmore Stevenson and Flora Parham Stevenson.

Mr. Stevenson was a retired service manager at Farm Tractor and Equipment Company. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, and was a member of Carey Baptist Church and the Loyal Order of Moose.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at 7 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Terry Allebaugh. A private burial will be held in Sunset Gardens.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Margaret Glover Stevenson; a son, Michael Stevenson of Chapel Hill; a daughter-in-law, Pam Stevenson of Durham; a brother, Walter Stevenson and wife, Ferbee, of Gastonia; three granddaughters, Amy Stevenson of Clayton, Ellen Williams and husband, Aaron, of Youngsville and Shannon Stevenson of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a great-grandson, Greyson Williams; and two step-grandchildren, Nick Eakes and Kathleen Eakes. He was preceded in death by a son, David Stevenson; and a sister, Hazel Williams.

The family will receive friends Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, from 5:30-7 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be the home, 953 Buckhorn St., Henderson.

HENDERSON — Grover Newton Crocker, 96, of 129 W. Parker St., Henderson, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Jimmie Gray Crocker and Flora Phillips Crocker. He was the widower of Evelyn Miller Crocker.

Mr. Crocker was a retired employee of Rose Oil Company. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at 1 p.m., at St. John’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Smith. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

Surviving are a daughter, Gloria Jean C. Cowan of Richmond, Va.; a son, G. Wayne Crocker of Lawndale; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Beulah Duke, Ora Robertson and Virginia Thomas; and three brothers, James Crocker, Arthur Crocker and Joe Crocker.

The family will receive friends Sunday, from noon-1 p.m., in the parrish house at St. John’s Episcopal Church. All other times, they will be at the home.

He was educated in the Granville County School System and worked in landscaping until his health declined.

Ronnie W. Moseley

WARRENTON — Ronnie Wayne Moseley, 70, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at the Durham VA Medical Center.

He was a Warren County native, born to the late Arthur and Hannah Stevensn Moseley. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Linda St. Sing Moseley. He was employed by the N.C. Dept. of Transportation, a member of Macon Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Navy.

The Rev. Rob Evans will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at Macon Baptist Church with burial to follow in Warren Plains Memorial Gardens.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Baull Moseley.

WHITAKERS — Genevieve Duke Moss, 90, a resident of 12820 Bellamy Mill Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation in Rocky Mount.

Born Nov. 28, 1922, in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late James H. Duke, Sr. and Mary Ella Blackley Duke. Moss was a member of Raleigh Road Baptist Church.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at 11 a.m., at Grey Rock United Methodist Church by the Rev. Brett W. Marlowe.

She is survived by one brother, James Hal Duke, Jr. of Whitakers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Moss; and one sister, Julia Elizabeth Fuller.

She was the daughter of Estelle Smith Robinson and the late Leroy Robinson.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Thomas Overby; one daughter, Amber Robinson, Oxford; three sons, Mark Robinson, Michael Pressley and Na’eem Robinson, all of Oxford; two stepchildren, Quantina Thompson and Justine Johnson, both of Durham; two foster children, Edward Alston and Adyah Alston, both of Oxford; four siblings, Leroy Robinson of Oxford, Terry Robinson of Newark, N.J., and Shawn Crawford and Dawn Crawford, both of Bronx, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.
