Perry R. Hayes
HENDERSON — Perry Rooker Hayes, 83, of 1061 Tollie Weldon Road, Henderson, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at his home.
Born in Franklin County on Feb. 19, 1930, he was the son of the late David Newell Hayes and Onnie Thomas Edwards, and was the widower of Elizabeth Brewer Hayes. He was a retired assistant manager at Harriet & Henderson Yarns, where he worked for more than 30 years, and was a member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 7, 2013, at 4 p.m., in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by lay minister Wayne Miller.
He is survived by his sisters, Lois H. Major of Henderson and Mary H. Young of Raleigh; his niece and caregiver, Dava M. Kopp and husband, Wayne Kopp; his cousins, who were his best friends, J.H. Smith and Hill Smith; his nephews, Todd Owens and wife, Cindy, and Jonathan Owens and wife, Mindy; and many other nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Sunday prior to the service from 3 until 4 p.m., at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at his home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o James Bowen, 1307 Walter Bowen Road, Henderson, NC 27537.
The family is extremely grateful to his hospice workers, Dorothy, Monica, Nicky and many others for their care and comfort with which they embraced Perry. Also, a special “thanks” to his hospice volunteer, Wayne Miller.
John V. Short
HENDERSON — John Vance Short, age 80, a resident of 1210 Dabney Drive, Henderson, died Thursday, July 4, 2013, at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.
Born on April 2, 1933, in Vance County, he was the son of the late Ollie Short and Katie Short Short. John was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was still an associate with Walmart where he was a former truck driver.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 6, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Dickerson Short of the home; and one brother, Ollie Gray Short and wife, Mary, of Youngsville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William Short and Bennie Short; and one sister, Ola Short Stegall.
The family will receive friends Saturday prior to the service from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Sunset Gardens. At other times they will be at the home at 1210 Dabney Drive.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Duke Home Care & Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Durham, NC 27704.

OXFORD — Samantha Jo Arrington, 21, of Oxford died Wednesday, July 3, 2013.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2013, at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by Rev. Jesse J. Parrish. Burial will follow in South Granville Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 8, 2013, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.

TOWNSVILLE — Annie C. Batchelor, 96, of 219 Howell Road, Townsville, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at her residence.

WARRENTON — DeCassandra “Dee Dee” Alston Harris, 51, of 545 U.S. 158 Business in Warrenton, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at her residence.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 7, 2013, at 3 p.m., at Warren County High School. Rev. A.F. Horton will officiate and burial will follow in Snow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Warrenton.
A viewing is today, July 6, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.

Virginia L. Hawkins
HENDERSON — Virginia Louise Hawkins, 73, a resident of 115 Grain Lane, Henderson, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Progressive Faith Missionary Baptist Church by Rev. Richard Batts and Prophet Previs Foster. Interment will follow in Jordan Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
