James Smith

HENDERSON — James Smith of Bessemer, Ala., formerly of Henderson, departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Lea Funeral Home Chapel, 2500 Poole Road, Raleigh. Visitation will take place from 10:30-11 a.m., prior to the service. The Rev. Charles Burrell will officiate. Interment will take place at Carolina Biblical Gardens, Garner.

Survivors include: his son, Christopher James of Alabama; grandson, Christopher James II of Alabama; aunts, Sue Doris Hicks of Raleigh, Frances Owens (Alton) of Henderson and Gertie Williams of Newnan, Ga.; three nephews; one niece; several cousins and friends.

HENDERSON — Ruth Eaves Brame, 81, of 804 Eastside Drive, Henderson, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

William L. Borst

HENDERSON — William Lewis Borst, 45, of 100 Log Cabin Drive, Henderson, died Wednesday, Feb. 6. 2013, at Rutherford Regional Medical Center in Rutherfordton.

Waverly Cheek

HENDERSON — Waverly Cheek, 58, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

He was born in Warrenton on July 4, 1937, to the late Lawrence and Stella Jane Cheek. At an early age, he became a Christian and joined Saint Matthews Baptist Church, which later became Saint Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He attended Warren County Public Schools, and, in 1955, moved to Camden, N.J.

For many years, Waverly was employed as a certified auto mechanic at his own auto shop and truck towing company. In retirement, he fished and spent time with his family and friends.

Survivors include: a son, Paul Cheek of Teaneck, N.J.; two daughters, Patricia Thompson of Camden, N.J., and Marjorie Brooks of River Dale, Ga.; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond and Lawrence Cheek; and six sisters, Vernice Cheek, Lena Epps, Lizzie Cheek, Mary Cheek, Barbara Downer and Brenda Mills. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Cheek; two sons, Michael and Waverly Cheek; two grandchildren; and three brothers, William, Lorenzo and Eugene Cheek.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Saint Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Warrenton, with a eulogy delivered by the Rev. Jordan Wilkins. Interment will follow at the Cheek Family Cemetery. A viewing will take place one hour before the service, from 1-2 p.m.

Lenita S. Fortson

HENDERSON — Lenita Chris “Ne-Ne” Siplen Fortson, 38, of 511 Spring Court, Henderson, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

She was born Aug. 9, 1974, in Vance County, to Lelia Debnam Siplen and the late Albert Lee Siplen,

She joined Welcome Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and remained a member until her death, She was a member of the Guardian Angel’s Club and worked with the Women’s Fellowship. She graduated from Southern Vance High School and received her business administration degree from Vance-Granville Community College.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at 1 p.m., at Progressive Faith Missionary Baptist Church, with Pastor Saint J. Silver of Welcome Chapel Baptist Church officiating.

Survivors include: two daughters, Paris and Asia Harrison, both of the home; one grandson; her mother, Lelia Debnam Siplen of Henderson; four brothers, Albert Lamont Siplen of Henderson, Johnny Siplen of Florida, Albert Siplen of Eutis, Fla., and Lee Davis of Virginia; and three sisters: Suzette Siplen of Henderson, Rosa Polite of Orlando, Fla., and Ann Cooper of Jasper, Fla.

Viewing will take place today, from noon-6 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Lelia Debnam Siplen, 207 Welcome Ave., Henderson.

Hunter M. Grady

CREEDMOOR — Hunter “Buck” McKinley Grady, 89, a longtime resident of Creedmoor, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at VA Hospital in Durham.

A native of Mecklenburg County, Va., he was the son of the late Hunter J. and Fannie Newcomb Grady. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church; a World War II veteran, receiving several medals, including the silver star and purple heart; and had retired from the water plant for the City of Creedmoor.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at 2 p.m., in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Marc Tilley. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Willie Lee Boyd Grady; two daughters, Charlotte Stephenson and Bettie Petty; two sons, Robert M. Grady and Glenn J. Grady; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Those who preceded him in death include: his first wife, Annie Mae Vargo Grady; and four sisters, Alma Harris, Flossie Newcomb, Louise Powell and Sudie Seamster.

Wayne Tingen

BULLOCK — Wayne Tingen, 63, of Bullock, died Thursday, Feb. 07, 2013.

A native of Granville County, he was the son of the late Wilton H. and Coreen Faucette Tingen. He was a member of Marrow’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Marrow’s Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Darrel Bowley and the Rev. Sam Brewer. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m., prior to the service, in the fellowship hall of the church, and at other times at the home of Jean and Lee Roy Beam, 4199 Buckhorn Road, Bullock.

Surviving are a brother, W. H. Tingen of Oxford; and three sisters, Barbara T. Smart of Bullock, Shirley T. Hall of Richmond, Va., and Jean T. Beam of Bullock. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Tingen.

Plummer E. Yancey

HENDERSON — Plummer Edward Yancey, 78, of 1425 Spring Valley Road, Henderson, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Universal Healthcare of Oxford.

He was born Jan. 21, 1935, to the late Henry Yancey Sr. and the late lda Alston Yancey.

He was educated in Vance County Schools, and was employed as a custodian at Vance-Granville Community College and at Harriett and Henderson Yarns until his retirement.
He was married to the late Alice Mae Perry Yancey.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at noon, at St. Patti United Church of Christ, with Pastor Michael P. Carter II officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include: five daughters, Paulette Marrow of Franklinton, Teresa Yancey and Katrina Yancey, both of Henderson, Alice Marie Reid of Fayetteville and Faydean Yancey of Rocky Mount; three sons, Ronnie Lee Yancey of Philadelphia, Pa., and Christopher Yancey and Milton Yancey, both of Henderson; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and four sisters, Mary Belle Wimbush and Marion Person, both of Henderson, Lillian Brown of Newark, N.J., and Elizabeth Brame of Oxford.

Viewing will take place Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, from 1-5:30 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.
