William D. Turner Sr.

HENDERSON — Mr. William Durward Turner Sr., age 94, a resident of 938 Hargrove St., Henderson, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at a local nursing home.

Born on May 30, 1918, he was one of five children born to the late Robert Jackson Turner and Myrtle Rowe Turner. Mr. Turner was the owner and operator of Turner Distributing Company and a member of First Baptist Church Henderson. He attended Wake Forest College in Wake Forest and graduated from N.C. State College with a B.S. degree. A captain in the United States Navy, he was a naval aviator and served four years during World War II. Following World War II he served 26 years in the Naval Reserve Air Wing 86 as a commanding officer. He ended his career with the Navy by serving as a member of the National Reserve Policy Board. Mr. Turner also was a Vance County member of the Airport Authority for 25 years, and a past president of the Rotary Club.

A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church Henderson on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at 2 p.m., conducted by Dr. Ronald S. Cava and Dr. Marion D. Lark.

Mr. Turner is survived by two sons, William Durward Turner Jr. of Garner and Robert Neil Turner of San Rafael, Calif.; his granddaughter Mary Taran Turner; two nephews, Robert Myrick Browning and Rowland G. Turner Jr.; and one niece, Elizabeth Browning Bailey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Rauk Turner; a sister, Margaret Turner Browning; and three brothers, Rowland G. Turner, Robert J. Turner Jr. and James Rowe Turner.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the parlor of First Baptist Church.

Frances P. Twisdale

HENDERSON — Frances Pegram Twisdale, 77, of 378 Daniel Boone Trail, Henderson, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late James Thomas Pegram and Annie Mae Parham Pegram.
Mrs. Twisdale was a retired employee of Laurens Glass Inc. She was an active member of North Henderson Baptist Church and the Edith South Sunday School Class.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at 2 p.m., at North Henderson Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Brent Kasey. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, James Oscar Twisdale; a daughter, Bonnie T. Fisher and husband, Carl, of Henderson; two sons, Jimmy Twisdale and wife, Patricia, and Danny Twisdale, all of Henderson; three sisters, Louise P. Gibson and husband, Sidney, of Littleton, and Betsy P. Gupton and husband, Gene, and Shirley P. Taylor and husband, Al, all of Henderson; a brother, Robert Pegram of Shelby; three grandchildren, Kevin Fisher, Jodi Pulley and husband, Allan, and Annie Twisdale; four great-grandchildren, Kaleb Fisher, Kalie Fisher, Drew Fisher and Allie Pulley; and a sister-in-law, Frances B. Pegram, of Henderson. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Paige Twisdale; and a brother, James A. Pegram.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, from 12:30-2 p.m., in the fellowship hall at North Henderson Baptist Church. All other times, they will be at the home, 378 Daniel Boone Trail, Henderson.

Serving as active pallbearers will be her nephews, Craig Gibson, Greg Johnson, Darrell Johnson, Dale Neathery, Tony Gupton, Steven Gupton, Keith Johnson, Bobby Pegram, Tommy Pegram, Mike Pegram, Brad Pegram, Clay Gibson and Wayne Pegram.

Flowers will be accepted; or memorials may be made to North Henderson Baptist Church, 1211 N. Garnett Street, Henderson, NC 27536.

NORLINA — Eva Bullock, 87, of 147 Woodway Drive, Norlina, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Flora Bullock

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Flora Bullock, 62, of Philadelphia, Pa., formerly of Warren County, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Alfloyd Kearney

HENDERSON — Alfloyd Kearney, 67, of 606 Vicksboro Road, Henderson, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Patricia L. Pegram

OXFORD — Patricia Lyon Pegram, 65, a resident of 202 Peace St., Oxford, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at her home.

She was the daughter of the late Otha Lee Lyon and Lillian Bullock Lyon. She was a member of Union Chapel Baptist Church, Patricia attended Hawley High Schhol. She was a former employee of Murdoch Center.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at 2 p.m., at the Betts and Son Funeral Home Chapel, with a eulogy delivered by the Rev. Harold Trice.

Survivors include one daughter; Bernita Parrish of Butner, one son; Vernon Pegram of Oxford; one sister; Marie L. Moss of Butner, one brother; Leonard E. Lyon of Butner; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren.

A viewing will take place today, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at the Betts and Son Funeral Home.


Clay W. Rowland Jr.

TOWNSVILLE — Clay William Rowland Jr., 77, a resident of 711 Pollyanna Road, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Born on March 7, 1935, in Cabarrus County, he was the son of the late C.W. Rowland Sr. and Mytrice Fredrick Rowland. Rowland was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a retired senior designer for Monsanto in the Research Triangle Park.

No services will be held.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Dixon Rowland of the home; one son, Bryant Clay Rowland of Hampstead; and one sister, Elaine Rowland Coats of Flagler Beach, Fla.

Sharon M. Vaughan

NORLINA — Sharon JoAnn Minton Vaughan, 42, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at her residence. She was born in Scotland Neck, to Henry Dalton and Virginia Dale Carpenter Minton. Sharon attended Macon Baptist Church and was a processing assistant at the Warren County Department of Social Services.

The Rev. Rob Evans will conduct funeral services Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at 10 a.m., at Macon Baptist Church with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Macon.

She is survived by her husband, Forest E. Vaughan Jr.; her mother, Virginia Dale Carpenter; her sons, Ryan Neal and Forest E. Vaughan; and her brother, John R. Minton of Raleigh.
