Dennis T. Hight Sr.

GREENSBORO — Dennis Thomasson Hight Sr., a long time resident of Greensboro, departed for his Father’s House on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013.

Mr. Hight was born June 25, 1924 and grew up in Lynchburg, Va., the son of the late John James Hight and Sallie Catherine Elliot Hight. Dennis was one of eight siblings, Hazel E. Hight, Wilhelmina E. Hight, Lucy Lerleen Hight, Mae P. Hight, Nancy Hight Hudson, James Lyle Hight and John P. Hight, all of who preceded him in death. Dennis was a World War II veteran serving in the European theater, including the famous Battle of the Bulge. A longtime employee of Western Union, he moved throughout North and South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland during his career and retired in Greensboro. Mr. Hight was married for over 55 years to the late Martha Crowell of Oxford.

Mr. Hight is survived by his two children, son, Dennis T. Hight Jr. (Susan) of Greensboro and daughter, Catherine H. Gaither (Henry) of Burlington; five grandchildren, Spencer, Scott and Caroline Gaither, and Erin and John Hight; and great-grandson, Oliver Gaither.

Visitation will be on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, from 9:45-10:45 a.m., at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford, followed by a graveside funeral service conducted by the Rev. Van Lowe at Elmwood Cemetery, also in Oxford.

The family requests memorials be given in lieu of flowers to Muirs Chapel United Methodist Church, 314 Muirs Chapel Road, Greensboro, NC 27410; or Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

WARRENTON — Van Gease, 92, of 169 Old Neck Road, Warrenton, died at his home Jan. 30, 2013.

Merna Matthews

TOWNSVILLE — Merna Matthews, 69, a resident of 15781 N.C. 39 North, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at her home.

Born on July 1, 1943 in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late John M. McKinney and Maggie Watson McKinney. She was the former owner and operator of Hibernia Shell Convenience Store, a member of South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church and a member of the Living By Faith Sunday School Class.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at 2 p.m., at South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

She is survived by her husband, William “Bill” Matthews of the home; two daughters, Melinda M. Reams of Williamsboro and Ramona Matthews of Carboro; and five grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Nance and her brother, Jimmy McKinney.

The body will be taken home (to the residence) where the family will receive friends today, from 2-6 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be Matthew Reams, William “Bimbo” Jefferson, Morris Batten, Kevin McKinney, Johnny Williams, Jack Pernell and Adam Williams.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 914, Henderson, NC 27536.

Nellye R. Tunstall

STEM — Nellye Roberts Tunstall, 98, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013.

The family will receive friends today, from 10-11 a.m., prior to the service at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford.
