Lily M. Phillips

HENDERSON — Lily Mobley Phillips, 89, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, in a local nursing home.

Born in Pitt County on Oct. 26, 1923, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas Mobley and Lillie Gertrude Evans Mobley and was the widow of Rev. John William Phillips.

Mrs. Phillips graduated summa cum laude from Campbell College and from Wake Forest University and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was also a graduate of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and Andover-Newton Theological School.

She was a retired high school English teacher in the Vance County Schools system and was a former president of the Delta Kappa Gamma teachers association. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at First Baptist Church by Dr. Ronald S. Cava. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

She is survived by one daughter, Lisa Phillips Finch and husband R. Kim Finch of Henderson; one son, Jonathan Phillips and wife Larn-Huar Phillips of Wake Forest; one grandson, Thomas Finch of Henderson; one granddaughter, Emma Finch of Henderson; and her special caregivers, Marion Person, Sandra Bullock, Josephine Robinson and Brenda Williams.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. in the church parlor at First Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 75, Henderson, NC 27536.

Jesse L. Gooch

HENDERSON — Jesse Lee Gooch, 61, of 3985 Weldon’s Mill Road, Lot 3, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

Born in Wake County, he was the son of the late James Ivan Gooch and Swannie Mae Holland Gooch.

Mr. Gooch was a self-employed water-proofer. He was of the Baptist faith.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at Sunset Gardens by Rev. Frank Sossamon.

Surviving are a sister, Sylvia G. Dickerson and husband Johnny; and two brothers, James I. Gooch Jr. and wife Jane, and Jackie D. Gooch, all of Henderson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Gooch.

The family will receive friends at the home of Sylvia and Johnny Dickerson, 3822 Vicksboro Road, Henderson.

Curtis F. Smith

HENDERSON — Curtis Floyd “John” Smith, 75, of 535 South Cooper Drive, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, in a local nursing home.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at Harriett Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
