Roger L. Davis

HENDERSON — Roger Lambert Davis, age 74, a resident of 221 Sam Brummitt Road, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2014, at his home after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born Oct. 28, 1939, in Durham County, he was the son of the late Paul and Beulah Davis. Roger was educated in the Orange County school system and attended the University Of North Carolina Chapel Hill and Louisburg College. He retired in 1990 after 31 years with the N.C. Highway Patrol – DMV Enforcement Section as a law enforcement officer. After retirement, he established a motor vehicle dealership in the Henderson area. He was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church and was a member of the Henderson Lodge No. 229 AF & AM, York Rite Bodies, Allied Masonic Degree, Granville County Shrine Club and Wake County Shrine Club, the Amaran Temple in Raleigh and the U.S. Marshall Service.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Island Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Marshall Neathery.

He is survived by his wife, Scarlet Hamlet Davis of the home; one daughter, Karen Davis Newins and husband John and grandson Brandon, all of Chesapeake, Virginia; one step-daughter, Danelle Piper; one step-granddaughter, Taylor Piper; and one sister, Lucille Barbee, all of Hillsborough; one nephew, David Davis and wife Vickie and their children, Randi and Michael; and his loving dogs, Rudy and Roxy.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Fellowship Hall at Island Creek Baptist Church. At other times, they will be at the home, 221 Sam Brummitt Road, Henderson, NC 27537.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Island Creek Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Road, Henderson, NC 27537, or the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.

His memory will be cherished by his family and large, long-standing, loving group of friends.

His family would like to give special thanks and consideration to the Community Home Care and Hospice caregivers. And, finally, special thanks and love to his amazing friends who spent so much time with him and all of his “army” of supporters.

James H. Brown

KITTRELL — James Henry Brown, age 74, a resident of 1546 Dick Smith Road, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the SECU Hospice Center in Smithfield.

Born on Sept. 21, 1939, in Vance County, he was the son of the late Abner Smith Brown and Grace May Davis Brown. He was a member of Plank Chapel United Methodist Church.

A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Carolyn Roy. He is survived by one daughter, Kristi Brown of Kittrell; two sisters, Ann Finch and husband Henry of Kittrell and Jeannette Weaver and husband Joe of Kittrell; and the mother of his daughter, Juanita F. Harris and husband Chip of Kittrell.

The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church following the service. At other times, they will be at 1700 Dick Smith Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Plank Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 507, Kittrell, NC 27544.

Violet G. White

DURHAM — Violet Gupton White, 92, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Eno Point Assisted Living, Durham. Born in Florence County, South Carolina, Mrs. White was the daughter of Lewis Presley Sauls and Mary Elizabeth Mims Sauls. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edwin T. White; her former spouse, Perry Linwood Gupton; a son, Kenneth L. Gupton; two grandchildren, David Goghill and Kevin Gupton; one great-grandchild, Joshua A. Hall; a sister, Mary Willie Jackson; and five brothers, Kenneth Sauls, Jack Sauls, Bill Sauls, Jerry Sauls and Jimmy Sauls.

Mrs. White is survived by a daughter, Patricia Gupton Coghill and husband Bill; grandchildren, Lisa Coghill Hall and husband Mark, Kathy Gupton Hobby, Marianne Gupton Knapp and husband Randy, and Richard Coghill; two great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; twin great-great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Elmwood Cemetery in Henderson with the Rev. Mark Hall officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sam Coghill, Holden Coghill, Jordan Bell, Lang Coghill, James Williams Jr. and Robert Adcock.

Robert G. Kilgore

HENDERSON — Robert George Kilgore, age 74, a resident of 1744 Parker Lane, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at his home.

Born on Feb. 11, 1940, in Morristown, Tennessee, he was the son of the late George Arthur Kilgore and the late Marian Shepherd Kilgore. He was a retired regional vice president for Belk Stores Inc., served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church by Dr. John M. Check and the Rev. Timothy J. Burgess.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Vassar Kilgore of Henderson; one daughter, Staci K. Barnett and husband Neil of Henderson; one son, Kevin G. Kilgore and wife Tonya of Henderson; three grandchildren, Alex Barnett, Allison Kilgore and Andrew Kilgore; two sisters, Mary Ellen K. Hupp of South Boston and Amy K. Jeffrey of Fayetteville; and one brother, William M. Kilgore of High Point. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur R. Kilgore, and one sister, Elizabeth A. Kilgore.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church 114 Church St., Henderson NC 27536, or the New Sandy Creek Baptist Church Family Life Center Building Fund, 1699 Weldon’s Mill Road, Henderson NC 27537.

Keith H. Harris

HENDERSON — Keith Hartwell Harris, age 57, a resident of 4999 Glebe Road, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at his home. Born on June 29, 1956, in Vance County, he was the son of the late Franklin Harris and Shirley Raines Harris. He was employed as a carpenter by The Rogers Group.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the J.M. White Funeral Home chapel by Rev. Frank Sossamon.

He is survived by one daughter, Bethany Nicole Harris and husband Dustin Moore of Stantonsburg; one granddaughter, Madilynn Nicole Moore of Stantonsburg; two sisters, Darlene Ayscue and Belinda Garner, both of Henderson; and one stepbrother, Scottie Barham Sr. of Henderson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Letisa Harris; one brother, Andy Harris; and his stepfather, Leon Barham.

The family will receive friends prior to the service Thursday night from 6 to 7 p.m. at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will receive friends at the home.

Dorothy D. Martin

HENDERSON — Dorothy Dickerson Martin, 73, of 699 Mabry Mill Road, died Monday, May 26, 2014, at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the J.M. White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in the New Sandy Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at J.M. White Funeral Home.

Reuben J. Perkinson Jr.

HENDERSON — Reuben Joseph Perkinson Jr., 76, of Henderson, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at a local nursing home in Henderson.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the J.M. White Funeral Home chapel in Henderson. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens Cemetery, also in Henderson.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at J.M. White Funeral Home.
