PENSACOLA, Fla. — Maureen Ferguson went Home on Monday, May 13, 2013; her son was with her when she passed.
Verna Maurine Ferguson Gill was born July 14, 1922, in Gadsden, Ala. She grew up in Fort Payne and Attalla, Ala., graduating from Etowah High School in 1940. Not long after her graduation, she changed the spelling of her name, on her own, to “Maureen.”
She met William Hester “Bill” Gill, a native of Henderson, in Montgomery, Ala., when she accompanied a friend, Hildred Ellis, to see Hildred’s future husband, Gerald Naylor. Gerald and Bill were training to fly B-24 bombers at Maxwell Air Force Base during World War II. Maureen and Bill were married in Attalla, Ala., at First Baptist Church, on June 14, 1945.
After living in Durham; Raleigh; Charleston, S.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala.; and Paducah, Kty., where Bill had various positions with Sears, the family eventually settled in Pensacola, Fla.
In Pensacola, the Gills were members of First Baptist Church, until 2005, when Rick moved his membership to East Brent Baptist Church, and Maureen moved her membership in 2006.
She was also a former member of the Bouquet Garden Club for many years, winning many awards for daylilies and camellias.
She was preceded in passing by her husband, William Hester “Bill” Gill, former manager of Sears, Pensacola, Fla., in 1989; her parents, Verna Mae (Rhodes) and Richard Monroe Ferguson of Attalla, Ala.; her mother- and father-in-law, Mamie Clinton (Edwards) and Clarence Lee Gill, of Henderson; a brother-in-law, Preston T. Phillips of Gadsden, Ala.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Alma (Gill), and J.B. Pugh, all of South Boston, Va.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Ora Lee (Gill), and ”Cleve” Harris, all of Locust Grove, Va.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Annie Shelton (Dunkley) and Allen Gill of Henderson; a sister-in-law and her husband, Lavina (Dudick), and James Gill, of Henderson; a first-cousin, Frances Ann Watkins of Birmingham, Ala.; and three nephews, Ronald “Ronnie” Ferguson of Haines City, Fla., Rodney Harris of Providence, Kty, and James “Jimmy” Gill of Warsaw, Ky.
She is survived by a son, William Richard ”Rick” Gill of Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Mary Elizabeth (Ferguson) Phillips of Gadsden, Ala., and a brother, Richard Monroe Ferguson Jr. of Fort Payne, Ala.; a niece-in-law and great-nephew, Debbie (Robinson) Ferguson and her son, Richard ”Lance” Ferguson, all of Haines City, Fla.; a nephew and niece-in-law, Richard Phillips (Beverly Phillips) of Birmingham, Ala.; a nephew, Preston ”Tommy” Phillips Jr. of Bridgehampton, N.Y.; a niece and nephew-in-law, Beth (George) Day, and great-nieces, Claire Day and Brooke Day, all of Gadsden, Ala.; a niece and nephew-in-law, Patricia (Ferguson) and Curtis Mitchell Sr. of Fort Payne, Ala.; a first cousin, Noel Ferguson of Attalla, Ala.; a great-nephew, Lee Ferguson, his wife, Anne Mueller Ferguson, and great-great-nephews, their sons, Richard Ethan Ferguson, Caleb Tiger Ferguson and Noah Lukas Ferguson, all of Oberhaching, Germany; a great-nephew, David Ferguson, Washington, D.C.; a nephew and niece-in-law, Richard ”Butch” Ferguson (Teresa Elliott Ferguson), Albertville, Ala.; a great-niece and great-nephew-in-law, Kristy Ferguson Parker (John Watkins ”Watt” Parker), and their children, great-great-nephew, Max Parker, and great-great-niece, Kate Parker, of Arab, Ala.; a great-nephew, Curtis Mitchell Jr., Clearwater, Fla.; a nephew, Allen Edwards Gill Jr. of Henderson, and great-nephew, Parker Gill of Henderson; a nephew, Brien Pugh, Prospect Hill; Lee Pugh (Cheryl Daniel Pugh) and their daughter, a great-niece, Karla Pugh of South Boston, Va.; and a niece, Cynthia Gwen Harris, Locust Grove of Va.
Visitation was held at 5-7 p.m., Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, in Pensacola, Fla.
A funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 17, 2013, at East Brent Baptist Church, Pensacola, Fla., with Dr. Dale Patterson officiating. Burial followed at Bayview Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the East Brent Baptist Church Library Building Fund, 4801 N. Davis Hwy., Pensacola, FL 32503, to help replace a building destroyed by a hurricane.
James F. Fitts
HENDERSON — James Franklin “Bo” Fitts, age 79, a resident of Senior Citizens Nursing Home in Henderson, died Saturday, May 18, 2013.
Born on July 5, 1933, in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Pinkey Cornelius Fitts and Martha Medlin Fitts.
Graveside services were be held Monday, May 20, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Prewer.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nannie Odell Fitts Lewis and Janice Fitts Barker.
The family received friends immediately following the service at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery; at other times they will be at the home of Loretta Williams at 1834 N. Clearview Drive, Henderson.

Mary C. McFaddin
HENDERSON — Mary Clark McFaddin, age 73, a former resident of Courtyard Apartments, died Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Kerr Lake Nursing & Rehab.
Born on March 11, 1940, in Botetourt County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Admiral Dewey Clark and Ruby Ayers Farrow. She was a retired nursing assistant and a member of South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Funeral services will be held tonight, at 7:30 p.m., in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert Greene and the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will be in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens in Lexington, Va.
She is survived by one daughter, Donna B. Gupton of Kittrell; one son, Dean McFaddin and wife, Linda, of Henderson; three sisters, Joyce Maynard of Henderson, Barbara Miller of Lexington, Va., and Helen Keith of Buchanan, Va.; one brother, Kenneth Farrow of Staunton, Va.; four grandchildren, Nicki Null Darnell and husband, Matthew, Dean McFaddin Jr. and wife, Meredith, Guy McFaddin and Heather McFaddin; and two great-grandchildren, Amber Null and Autumn Null. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, William D. Farrow; her husband, Guy Winfred McFaddin; one sister, Margie Goodbar; one brother, Elburn Farrow; and her son-in-law, Tommy Gupton.
The family will receive friends tonight prior to service, from 6-7:30 p.m., at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the homes of Donna Gupton at 2295 Egypt Mountain Road, Kittrell, and Dean and Linda McFaddin at 3090 N. Lynnbank Road, Henderson.

Katie S. Bullock
HENDERSON — Katie Small Bullock, 99, of 981 Tungsten Mine Road, Henderson, died Friday, May 17, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Frank Scoll and Annie Hargrove Small.
She joined Antioch Church of Christ (now Antioch United Church of Christ) at a very early age.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Antioch United Church of Christ by the Rev. Kevin Langley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors include: two sons, Frank Bullock and Burndell Bullock, both of the home; two daughters, Annie Evans of Townsville and Joyce St. John of Virginia; 88 grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.
The family is receiving friends at the residence of Annie Evans, 147 Keeton Road, Townsville. The body will be on view at the funeral home Wednesday, May 22, 2013, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., and at the church one hour before the service.

Goldie G. Burwell
HENDERSON — Goldie Gertrude Burwell, 90, died Friday, May 17, 2013, at Luceorja Adult Care Home in Charlotte after a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Vance County, to the late Harry Burwell and Goldie Gales Burwell.
Survivors include: one daughter, Barbara B. Cousins of Charlotte; one son, Calvin Cousins of Raleigh; two granddaughters; two grandsons; and two sisters, Gladys Burwell Wright and Jeanette Burwell Mitchell, both of Henderson. She was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.
Arrangements are by Alexander Funeral Home in Charlotte.

HENDERSON — Alan Stanton Finlayson, 31, of 1972 S. Lake Lodge Road, Henderson, died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough.

HENDERSON — Willie S. Gooch, 77, of King Street in Henderson, died Friday, May 17, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Robert C. Smith Jr.
HENDERSON — Robert Cornelius “Bobby” Smith Jr., 59, of 950 Cheeks Quarter Road, Henderson, NC died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Novant Health Medical Center in Louisburg.
Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Robert C. Smith Sr. and Alma Wallace Smith.
Smith was a self-employed painter.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 2 p.m., at the Salvation Army, conducted by Capt. Rick Langley.
Surviving are two sons, Corey Smith and Drake Smith, both of Arkansas; a sister, Wanda S. Hedgepeth of Kittrell; two brothers, Tony Smith and Sidney Smith, both of Henderson; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of Tony and Kathy Smith, 503 Alexander Ave., Henderson.

Marvis L. Street
HENDERSON — Marvis Lavonda Street, 34, of 644 Marshall St., Henderson, died Monday, May 19, 2013, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.

Mary T. Williams
OXFORD — Mary Ethel Tunstall Williams, 93, of 3702 Rockwell Road, Oxford, died Friday, May 17, 2013, at Granville Medical Center in Oxford.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Martha Hargrove Tunstall. She joined Michael Creek Baptist Church at an early age and remained a member until death. She served as deaconess, Mother of the Church, kitchen committee member and an active worker in the missionary department.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at 1 p.m., at Michael Creek Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Wiley W. Robinson, with the Rev. Sam Tunstall presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
No immediate survivors.
The family is receiving friends at the residence. The body will be on view at the funeral home today, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., and at the church one hour before the service.
