Glenn T. Harte

HENDERSON — Glenn Thomas Harte, 91, died Tuesday May 14, 2013, at the Senior Citizens Home in Henderson.

He was born Jan. 9, 1922, in Henderson. Glenn was raised and educated in Vance County. He served in the Army during World War II. He was the owner/operator of Midway Service Center and Harte’s Garage on N.C. 158 Business for over 50 years.

Glenn loved gardening and grew tomatoes that his family looked forward to every summer. He was an avid reader and was always learning. He enjoyed politics and worked at the polls in Vance County up until a year before his death.

Glenn is survived by his brother-in-law, John N. Chatham of Durham; nieces, Nancy Jo Chatham and Susan K. Chatham, both of Durham, and Denise Chatham of Baltimore, Md.; great nephew, Adam N. Crandell (Tina) of Baltimore, Md.; and great niece, Kathryn “Katy” C. Mims of Greenville.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude Barnes Harte; and his sisters, Kathleen C. Harte and Hilda H. Chatham.

The family is planning a private interment at the cemetery at Hermon Methodist Church in Henderson at a later date.


Mary C. McFaddin

HENDERSON — Mary Clark McFaddin, age 73, a former resident of Courtyard Apartments, died Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Kerr Lake Nursing & Rehab.

Born on March 11, 1940, in Botetourt County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Adm. Dewey Clark and Ruby Ayers Farrow. She was a retired nursing assistant and a member of South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday night, May 21, 2013, at 7:30 p.m., in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert Greene and the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will be in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens in Lexington, Va.
She is survived by one daughter, Donna B. Gupton of Kittrell; one son, Dean McFaddin and wife, Linda, of Henderson; three sisters, Joyce Maynard of Henderson, Barbara Miller of Lexington, Va., and Helen Keith of Buchanan, Va.; one brother, Kenneth Farrow of Staunton, Va.; four grandchildren, Nicki Null Darnell and husband, Matthew, Dean McFaddin Jr. and wife, Meredith, Guy McFaddin and Heather McFaddin; and two great-grandchildren, Amber Null and Autumn Null. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, William D. Farrow; one sister, Margie Goodbar; one brother, Elburn Farrow; and her son-in-law, Tommy Gupton.

The family will receive friends Tuesday night, prior to service from 6-7:30 p.m., at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the homes of Donna Gupton at 2295 Egypt Mountain Road, Kittrell, and Dean and Linda McFaddin at 3090 N. Lynnbank Road, Henderson.

Estelle V. Mitchell

HENDERSON — Estelle Vaughan Mitchell, 89, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Franklin Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Louisburg.
She was born April 19, 1924, in Granville County, to the late Ed Vaughan and Zaripha Peace Vaughan.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 20, 2013, at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, with Pastor Melvin Solomon officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Vernon Junior Mitchell (Emley) of Louisburg; one daughter, Ella Wilson (Wayne) of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Viewing will take place today, from noon-5 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements are by Davis-Royster Funeral Service.


James F. Fitts

HENDERSON — James Franklin “Bo” Fitts, 79, a resident of Senior Citizens Nursing Home, died Saturday, May 18, 2013.

Born on July 5, 1922, in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Pinkey Cornelius Fitts and Martha Medlin Fitts.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday, May 20, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Prewer.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nannie Odell Fitts Lewis and Janice Fitts Barker.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery and at other times they will be at the home of Loretta Williams at 1834 N. Clearview Drive, Henderson.

Arrangements are by J.M. White Funeral Home.

Willie S. Gooch

HENDERSON — Willie S. Gooch, 77, of King Street in Henderson, died Friday, May 17, 2013, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

HENDERSON — Chyrise Kelly, 58, of 923 Patton Circle, Henderson, died Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

OXFORD — Mary Ethel Williams, 93, of 3702 Rockwell Road, Oxford, died Friday, May 17, 2013, at Granville Medical Center in Oxford.

Fredrick S. Woodard Jr.

BATTLEBORO — Fredrick S. Woodard Jr., 70, a resident of 4954 Wollett Mill Road, Battleboro, died Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.

He was the son of the late Fredrick S. Woodard Sr. and Grace Tyler Woodard. He was a former resident of 903 East F St., Butner, and a retired EMT with John Umstead Hospital in Butner.

He is survived by his wife, Princess Thompson Woodard; one son, Stephen Maurice Brown of Ayden; two daughters, Tammy Roberts of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Kathryn O. Hall of the USS Kearsarge; two sisters, Mary Grace Ware of Winston-Salem and Deloris W.Ellison of White Plain, Md.; two brothers, William “Bunny” Woodard of Butner and Lenwood Woodard of Chamblee, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Rocky Mount by the Rev. Thomas L. Walker. Burial will take place Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at 11 a.m., in Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor. Viewings will be held Monday, May 20, 2013, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford and Tuesday, May 21, 2013, beginning at noon, at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Rocky Mount.
